anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

Went to gyno today....

talked about my hard time with weaning.

(I never had a hint of baby blues, but once I weaned I was a mess for 6-8 weeks)

He was puzzled why I did not call for a prescrib for Zoloft.

I told him I never even thought of it and just hoped it went away....instead, I gained weight, wrecked my summer, and never cried so much in my life.

I still have good days and bad days. I was never an axiety person or anything, till this.

So....I am looking for any type of feedback for next time around if this should happen again. I would like to know where I stand on it before I get ever enter into that funk again.

do you just stop taking it once you think you feel better?
does it kick in quickly?
are there withdrawls?

I looked up info online, just looking to get different views.

you can fm me if you want, thanks!

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

My BF took Zoloft for anxiety attacks and she said it was great. It took a few days but she was SO much happier. She came off gradually and kept herself in touch with her therapist.

I hope you get through this soonChat Icon

And seeing what has happened to you, I think I may just wean one feeding at a time. We are down to two times a day and she doesn't seem to miss the one we just dropped.

I was on zoloft for two years prior to becoming pregnant with DS. I stopped for the pregnancy, and went back on after he was born. My depression/anxiety was so bad that I could not stay off of it long enough to breastfeed. I would also recommend a therepist...talking to someone helps so much! I actually just saw mine on Monday.
I hope you feel better soon, please FM if you need to talk! Chat Icon Chat Icon

thanks Juliet!

yeah....I never truely regret weaning, I was over it, he was addicted to it and I knew it was over when I wasn't looking forward to seeing him in the morning, knowing he was just going to yell at me to eat all day.

At the time I ended it, I was 3-4 feedings a day.

I am still AMAZED how my body went into shock.

Leo felt so bad for me. All of years together, he had never seen me like that....just in a daze.

Janice I'm currently being treated for PPD. I was on Zoloft but it didn't make me feel good. Let me rephrase it made me feel better in some ways (more energy, a lifted cloud) but it made me queasy for about an hour after taking it and disrupted my sleep.

I was seeing a therapist (social worker) and she wants me to see a psychiatrist because she feels I need more help than she can provide (thanks I feel like a basket case now)

Anyway if you go on the lowest dose to start (which I recommend) you can wean yourself off when you feel you may be ready. If it's not the lowest dose, you do need to be weaned off.

It does help, it's just not the right one for me.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I know how hard it is. FM me if you want to talk. Hope you feel betterChat Icon

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

I was on Zoloft on and off for a few years. It worked well for awhile, I had a lot of anxiety, and it took the edge off a little bit. DH and I started tossing around the idea of TTC so I wanted to get it out of my system, so I went off of it. This was in December. I don't know if it was seasonal depression or what, but I was DEPRESSED. And I have never been a depressed person. Cried every day, I was miserable and it was a horrible feeling. I went back on it with the "emergency" low dose prescription the Dr. gave me, and came back off of it in April. So far so good. I still have anxiety, but it's not like I had when I was 19/20.

I hope it helps and I'm sorry you're going through this. Chat Icon

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

thanks guys!

sorting through fms now. thanks to all the fms...its reassuring to know its slightly more common then I thought.

I have learned to take it in as a life lesson. I never understood what depression was or felt like...I always thought people could shake it if they wanted to....

but that's so not the truth. I am glad there are avenues of help out there.

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

as an anxiety sufferer I have explored many meds with my docs. The sense I always got was that zoloft and prozac were a little stronger with more side effects, especially with weight gain and addiction. Best meds I've ever been on was Lexapro. No side effects. Takes a short time to take effect. Really evens me out. You do have to wean off of them too but I've always been able to do it in a week or two. Mine is more pronounced in the winter months so I come off and on a lot. I also used it to help with PPD too.

I was on wellbutrin recently. I heard really good things about it. But i feel better on lexapro.

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

My Ob prescribed Zoloft at my 6week f/u after Clover. It was the worst thing for me. I gained ten pounds and felt crappier than ever (only took it for about 4 months though) The side effects when I stopped were extreme nausea and migraines.

It was my Pediatrician who actually spoke to me about talking with a support group and finding out options regarding medication. My Ob was quick to dismiss it by saying here take this and you'll be fine. The key is support from people who really listen!

Re: anyone take Zoloft for PPD or blues?

I'm on it....started right before P was born b/c of the anxiety of having 2 under 2 and continued while PG (they said it was safe) and even increased my dosage.

I still have bad days but I think that is so normal for my situation right now.

It helped ALOT

I don't have any experience with Zoloft, but I can HIGHLY recommend Lexapro. I took the lowest dose, had zero side effects, and stopped taking it easily (just took 1/2 a pill for a week or so, then stopped entirely). It totally balanced me out too, made me feel like myself again.

I hope you feel better soon. Weaning from BF'ing is supposed to be a bittersweet milestone but sadly you got more bitter.

I hope you find the right meds to make you be your best again.
