Anyone use a midwife?
DH and I have just started to TTC. I am thinking of switching to a new ob/gyn practice that has several ob/gyns and a few midwives. I'm not really sure how the whole midwife thing works. Is the midwife the person you see throughout your pregnancy and does the midwife actually deliver your baby? If you use a midwife do you ever see a physician? Would a physician be present during the delivery? I want to make an appointment, but I don't know what I should do. Thanks for your help!

Re: Anyone use a midwife?
Im using a midwife- I actually switched half way thru my pregnancy because I didnt like my doctor at all. The midwife is sooo much better so is so calming and personal whereas the doctor was very cold and made me nervous about the pregnancy. She is actually going to deliver the baby unless she is sick or something. She works for a doctor though( different one that before thank god)- incase I should need a c section. Even so though she will still be in the room. I have seen her throughout the pregnancy- they do everything that a doctor does basically except the actually surgery.

I also don't know anything about midwives, but am very curious. I'm very seriously considering changing doctors before we start planning for #2, and was curious about midwives. Do they believe in completely natural childbirth or are they supportive if you want an epidural? I know that I'd need one again, I'm a big weenie and couldn't take the pain after a while.

Re: Anyone use a midwife?
I used a midwife for all 3 of my kids. They are a group and they work with a group of doctor's. I go to University Associates. It's affiliated with Stony Brook. They are the absolute best. I had really long labors especially with my first child and I know a doctor would have just given me a c-section. The midwife totally worked me through it and I had the greatest delivery, no tearing or anything at all(sorry if tmi). They are just so much warmer and more personal IMO.

you can have an epidural if you want- not a problem at all.

Re: Anyone use a midwife?
My OB's office has 2 midwives. They are thee best! They make sure you meet with the whole practice throughout your pregnancy, so far I met with one midwife and love her. Dont get me wrong I love the Dr's too. The whole practice is just awesome. Its an all female practice which some ladies may not like but I prefer. Whoever is on call the night you go into labor is who delivers, if it is one of the midwives then she plus one of the Dr's come to the hospital. The midwife can deliver but the Dr must be right there. I know alot of my friends had the midwives deliver their babies with the Dr. standing right there for any possible problems that may occur. The midwives are very comforting and soothing. I love them and would highly recommend my practice. They are located in Rockville Centre and called Obstetrical and Gynecological Services of Rockville Centre. Dr's Blinderman and King. Good luck to whatever you choose!

I am using the same group of midwives and so far, they have been wonderful. For the actual labor and delivery, I am also using a labor support doula. My plan is to (hopefully) have a natural, unmedicated birth.
