Anyone use probiotics and find they cause MORE gas?
I'm confused. DD has always been gassy. She got over the newborn gassy burping thing, but now she seems to have more intestinal gas- she farts like a MAN! She had been grunting a lot and pulling her legs in and crying so I decided to try the BioGaia probiotics. She's been on them over a month and I really don't see a difference, but I almost feel like it's making her worse rather than better. She is fine most of the day but after her night bottle (which i put the pro-biotic in) she seems to wake up grunting and moving her legs a lot and seeming very uncomfortable. This happens every night.
Could it be the probiotics? I would imagine that they woldn't do any harm- whether or not they do any good is one thing but I woudln't think they would cause MORE gas kwim?
Anyone have an issue with probiotics and gas??

At first I really believed that they were working, but then as time went on I started to feel the same way you did.
I don't know if it was the brand I was using, but I eventually stopped.
I know a lot of people on here have had great success with certain kinds.
You might want to try a different brand, check the ingredients and make sure it's a non dairy, etc.

According to my pediatrician, since the formula companies (Similac, Enfamil, etc) added probiotics to their formulas he has seen a huge increase in babies with reflux, gas problems and other digestive issues. There have also been some studies on it.

Re: Anyone use probiotics and find they cause MORE gas?
Just some FYI:
Probiotics are not in most formula's. Only nutramigen w/lgg has probiotic lactobacillus gg and good start natural cultures Probiotics are a live and active bacteria and are most useful for infants with inflammation in gut
Prebiotics are in the Enfamil premium product, Newborn product and Similac Advance. Prebiotics are food ingredients that allow the good bacteria to ferment encouraging the growth of probiotics.
A recent study just showed that the dual prebiotics have a decreased effect on gas (enfamil premium) and a second study showed that there were no difference between regular formula w/o prebiotics vs. ones with prebiotics (similac advance)
Prebiotics in a nut shell, help to make stool similar to that of a breastfed baby, so it is much looser and waterier. There are hundreads of prebiotics in BM.
I have not seen any increase in gas from the formulas with prebiotics, I have seen a lot less constipation and hard stool. Gas and fussiness will always be present from week 4-12 due to transient lactose sensitivity.
HTH!

Thanks! I always wondered what the difference between probiotics and prebiotics were. I know some formulas (Enfamil premium and some of the target brands) have PRE biotics. But my DD is on an AR formula for excessive spit up and I don't think that has prebiotics.
So what about the PRObiotics? (Biogaia is what i am using) Do you think THAT can cause excess gas or no?

it can, but I have not seen too much of it. Different probiotic strains have different results. I only recommend probiotics when on antibiotics and when there is GI distress. Otherwise I just recommend having yogurt 3x a week.

I might stop them- they are SUPER expensive. I started them because I thought it would help with her intestinal gas...but its not helping at best- and maybe even making it worse...

That is usually a sign they are getting a little too much. When My DD started getting like this I went to giving the pro-biotics 2-3X a week instead of everyday and it was a great balance.
How often are you giving them?

Ah ha! I was doing it every day as per the label instructions. Maybe that's too much then! I will try to cut it down to 2-3 x a week and see if it helps Thanks!
