Anyone watch Oprah today about Autism?

So sad to see what these children and parents go thru. And to think the number is 1 in 150 children that are diagnosed with it. It is very alarming. It is becoming an epidemic and I read that boys are 4x more likely to get it than girls. It's very very scary. Chat Icon

I saw it and it was very scary for me to watch. Im gonna be watching for signs and make sure my Dr. does something if, god forbid, she is showing the signs for it.

Did they indicate what signs to look for and around what age?

Did they indicate what signs to look for and around what age?

Symptoms of Autism
The symptoms vary greatly but follow a general pattern. Not all symptoms are present in all autistic children.

Autistic infants may act relatively normal during their first few months of life before becoming less responsive to their parents and other stimuli. They may have difficulty with feeding or toilet training; may not smile in recognition of their parents' faces, and may put up resistance to being cuddled.

As they enter toddlerhood, it becomes increasingly apparent that these children have a world of their own. They do not play with other children or toys in the normal manner, rather they remain aloof and prefer to play alone.

Verbal and nonverbal communication skills, such as speech and facial expressions, develop peculiarly. Symptoms range from mutism to prolonged use of echoing or stilted language. When language is present, it is often concrete, unimaginative, and immature.

Another symptom of autism is an extreme resistance to change of any kind. Autistic children tend to want to maintain established behavior patterns and a set environment. They develop rituals in play, oppose change (such as moving furniture), and may become obsessed with one particular topic.

Other behavioral abnormalities that may be present are: staring at hands or flapping arms and hands, walking on tiptoe, rocking, tantrums, strange postures, unpredictable behavior and hyperactivity.

An autistic child has poor judgment and is therefore always at risk for danger. For instance, an autistic child may run into a busy street without any sign of fear.

Diagnosis of Autism
Properly diagnosing autism is very important, since confusion may result from inappropriate and ineffective treatment.

Deafness is often the first suspected diagnosis, since autistic children may not respond normally to sounds.

The children's appearance and muscle coordination are normal.

Occasionally, an autistic child has an outstanding skill, such as an incredible rote memory or musical ability. Such children may be referred to as "autistic savants."

Things to watch out for between 12-15 months:

absence of babbling
no pointing
avoiding eye contact
not responding to name
repetitive gestures, faces, sounds
lack of play skills
loss of milestones (ie used to clap hands but doesnt anymore)

Early Intervention is so important and so effective. If you have any concerns PLEASE take action ASAP, don't let you pediatrician tell you its too early. You have the right to have your child evaluated.

Re: Anyone watch Oprah today about Autism?

I watched, it left me sick.

To see that 2 year old holding his brother and talking, then one day nothing...

My stomach did a complete flip flop when the one mom said she believes the vaccinations were the cause. I know I have read that they aren't, but it still leaves me with such a sick feeling about pharmaceutical companies and their power.

It's so scary how much more prevalent autism has become. I think they still don't know why/how they are fine "before" and then start showing the signs. I watched some of the episode and it sounded like some may be genetic and some may be environmental. It's still so unknown.

Chat Icon My mom's friend has a grandson that didn't display any symptoms until he was a little over 1. She said the same thing.

i worked with children with Autism, and used to do home titoring with one boy and she SWORE the vaccinations did it to her child.
She said he was fine up until he got them , then stopped talking.

I think there is some link with the immune system. If you see "most's kids with autism suffer from allergies and get sick a lot, so I think it has do do with something in that lines

I'm in the education field and I've heard a lot of parents say they think the vaccinations have somthing to do with it. Think about it...it has to be something in the environment coupled with a genetic component. It's VERY scary, and I think early intervention is KEY.

Re: Anyone watch Oprah today about Autism?

thanks everyone for theChat Icon and nice words! Chat Icon the before period i am talking about IS pre immunizations.. i DO believe it has to do with immune systems... my son was sick alot with ear infections.. he also was always constipated and ALWAYS seem to have the croup.. after his 15 month immunization he had 105 fever for 3 weeks straight. after that, he wasn't the same.. he stayed in that mode for a year and half (with intervention) then started to "come out" of his shell and "start" to lose the self stims... he is still way oversensitive to sensory and socially awkward... among other things but every year he gets better and better and most people tell me now that if they didn't know they wouldn't be able to tell anymore.. so there is hope!! early intervention rocks!!!!!!Chat Icon
