Anyone who knows someone with cancer....
or has had it themselves.
when/if this person started to lose their hair, how did they cover it up?
i am trying to help my friend who has just started losing hers. she is thinking maybe to use headbands.
any other ideas? anything? please. thanks!

My dad never lost his hair during any of the two chemo cycles that he did. My best friend from Florida did lose his hair. It is different though because they are guys. I have seen numerous women with scarves.

Actually, she just went out yesterday and bought a beautiful wig. Looks gorgeous.

My aunt did lose her hair -- She used scarves for a while and also had 2 very nice wigs.

My aunt had lung cancer quite recently. When she started losing her hair, she first gave herself a buzzcut (think GI Jane). When it was a little too thin for her liking she bought a really nice wig (she only wore it if she was going out)

My MIL wore berets. She couldn't get used to wearing a wig even though she had an expensive human hair wig that looked nice on her. At least with my MIL, she felt most comfortable wearing nothing but wore hats because my BIL was uncomfortable seeing her like that (he was 15 at the time).

My mom got fitted for wigs, but hated them. She said they made her look old. She then tried the hats, but she did not like them either, so I took her to a motorcycle shop & got her some badazz do-rags in a variety of colours & patterns. Some were even faux-lambskin & warm (she began her chemo in the winter months & needed the extra warmth).
ETA: My mom said the most empowering thing she did was to shave her own head before it started to fall out too badly from the chemo.

When my sister lost her hair she got a wig, also a hat with a wig inside of it. She also wore bandanas

my mom was really self consious about the whole thing and went the wig route. The wig was nicer than her own hair! and looked really natural because of the human hair. Anywho she hardlly ever took it off she had a speacial sleep wig for sleeping too.

my mom hated losing her hair, but at the same time, she embraced it. she hated the wig and only wore it when she was going out somewhere fancy or where there would be a lot of people she wouldn't know.
she usually wore a cap or a bandana. a lot of times she didn't wear anythng.
she had the BEST hat: it said - "NO Hair Day" she loved that and kept it as a reminder of her fight!

I know wigs have come a long way since the "old days" and some of them are so natural looking you would never know.
I think that I would personally opt for that.
But everyone is different.
Many for your friend!

Once my mom's hair started falling out we went and had it shaved and she got a beautiful wig and also a hat that had hair velcro-ed in to look like a ponytail so that if she didn't want to wear the wig she could just throw the hat on and still look great!

My MIL wore beautiful wigs (soooo nice...you'd swear it was her own hair); scarves (her neice works for Hermes and got her GORGEOUS scarves); hats (baseball caps for leisure; berets and "fancier" hats for events).
She really ALWAYS looked so pretty!!

My sil had breast cancer. Before she started chemo/radiation she had a hair cutting party that we all went to and laughed so much it hurt. Her insurance company also paid for her to get 2 wigs and the family chipped in for a third.
If your friend needs help getting wigs, rxs, or anything contact 1 in 9 in Hewlett. The place is AMAZING! They have contacts ALL OVER and will provide FREE wigs.
Since my sil's cancer we have been doing fund raising for them every year. They are the only cancer group on LI that is for LI's. Here's their website. http://www.1in9.org/

I used a lot of bandanas and hats. I did not even buy a wig because I knew I would be uncomfrtable in it (noty that I loved having no hair either) But at my cancer place (in th e chemo area) they had free head scarves in a varity of colors and patterns that volunteers made. It's like a bandana but already fitted and tied so you just put it on like a hat.

My one aunt wore wigs all the time. The other aunt went au natural except for her daughters wedding. Now she keeps it in a buzz cut since she liked the upkeep so much.

My Mom usually wears her wig. But at home she often wears this bandana style head wrap thingy I got her in Mexico. It's easier to wear/tie than a scarf.
