Re: Anyone who wants to take a step back for a minute- I thought this was a good article
It is an interesting read. However, it doesn't change the fact that green card holders, and those with Visas that have already been vetted are being detained at US airports.
It also doesn't change the fact that Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt are all places known to have terrorist ties, and are not on the list. Why? Could it be, that Trump has business interests in at least 3 of the those 4 countries?
HERE is an article, complete with references, about terrorism, and immigration.

The green card issue I agree needs to be relooked out and I trust it will be. Im in agreement with that. However from what I have read they are detaining but letting them in with green cards rather quickly.

No one here needs a step back. We have hard working residents of American - people who live and work here - currently detained all across the country in airports.
We have global CeOs like google and Facebook in a tizzy and worried for their hard workers.
We have a local stony brook grad who hasn't seen her parents in 3 years and her parents were stopped. She's not sure when she will see them again.
So no. Stop trying to rationalize and box this away as normal and just.
I'm sorry you voted for a con man. You can hate immigration and be against refugees and I can understand that. I can. But stop it.
13 of the 15 men 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. Your Trump isn't blocking those from Saudi. Because he has ties there.
So be anti whatever but stop it. Call out his ********. I may lean left but I called out Hillary and Obama when it was fitting. You should do the same.

The countries selected were not "hand picked" by President Trump.
Actually, Obama Secretary of Homeland Security deemed these countries in 2015 as "areas of concern" This was part of the Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015.

I meant universal you not you particular. I can get why people are hesitant about immigration.
But obamas tactic was completely different and temporary.

We have one of our very own Stony Brook University graduate students currently detained at JFK.
This is sick.
Saudi Arabia, UAE and Afghanistan are left off the list. What do you know, Dump has golf courses in SA and UAE!
Want to know the number of business interests he has in the banned countries? ZERO. None. Coincidence? I think not.
The bast@rd needs to be impeached now. Like NOW.

Anyone who wants to take a step back for a minute- I thought this was a good article
I wonder if anyone here actually bothered to learn what the terrorist travel protection act of 2015 actually did.
DHS remains concerned about the risks posed by the situation in Syria and Iraq, where instability has attracted thousands of foreign fighters, including many from VWP countries. Such individuals could travel to the United States for operational purposes on their own or at the behest of violent extremist groups.
The U.S. Congress shares this concern, and on December 18, 2015, the President signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2016, which includes the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 (the Act). The Act, among other things, establishes new eligibility requirements for travel under the VWP. These new eligibility requirements do not bar travel to the United States. Instead, a traveler who does not meet the requirements must obtain a visa for travel to the United States, which generally includes an in-person interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
DHS has updated the ESTA application with additional questions to address the new eligibility requirements under the Act.

Of course a lot of people didn't bother to learn that act. They just want to scream that Obama did it, too, which we know is not true. They are simplifying, or better yet justifying, that this is OK.
Thanks for posting this.

Re: Anyone who wants to take a step back for a minute- I thought this was a good article
Very interesting in what it convenient in what it left out:
- that the countries of origin of most 9/11 hijackers are not included because Trump does business with them. So his conflict of interest is clearly a problem.
- Green card holders- who have established lives here- legally- are being denied entry. There is no way to justify that.
And finally, real national security experts are saying this will be a great rallying cry for terrorist group recruitment. Unfortunately, most of this country cares little what experts have to say.

DHS has updated the ESTA application with additional questions to address the new eligibility requirements under the Act.
The Act did impose new eligibility requirements. Now, Trump, via his executive order - without input from DHS or ICE, has decided it's not enough, and has halted all inbound travel - even for those who have already been vetted and granted visas.
Yes, those changes were made in December under Obama. However, did you see Obama get on national news and declare he was combating terrorism by stopping immigration? Did you see Obama on national news making The Act a HUGE piece of legislation that absolutely everyone needed to read about - including the extremists? Did you see people that had been vetted and granted visas, or holding green cards being detained at all of our nation's airports?
So, while yes, DHS decided which countries should be on a list for visas that require face-to-face interviews, the refugee process is still taking upwards of two years, no, the change in the law last year wasn't national news that stoked the fire of the extremists, and sparked protests.

Why not figure out the new, better vetting process before signing the order? Why not allow in those who have already been issued visas and who have been through 2 years of vetting already? It just seems they did not think this through at all and we're just rushing to do something big. I don't think they went about this the smartest way. Same with only including the countries Obama picked in 2015. The war on terror and the needs of refugees ate changing quickly. They didn't even take the time to make their own assessment of what countries to include.
