anyones child experiencing night terrors?
the past few weeks my daughter wakes up in the middle of the night and screams as if she is frightened by a bad dream or something...she is only 18 months old and up until now has been a great sleeper. I dont want to get into the habit of checking on her and walking in her room because if she sees me she wants me to pick her up...so i have been letting her soothe herself back to sleep which is what shes always done except i am so scared of how she screams so badly!she is so loud as if someone scary is in the room with her...and i feel so bad! i have heard of night terrors but im not sure if this is something to consider my daughter to have? if anyones child has had this problem and/or diagnosed by a dr let me know the symptoms and what you did about it...her 18 month check up is in 2 weeks and i plan to bring this up to the dr but in the mean time im wondering what everyone elses experience with this is like and what i should do?!

Re: anyones child experiencing night terrors?
If she's screaming, you go in the room and she sees you and then calms down, it's not night terrors. Night terrors are when they are actually sleeping but look and act like they are awake - their eyes may even be open - but the more you try to soothe them, the worse it is. It may even look like they are having a tantrum. My DS had some of these and they are very scary. All you can do is watch to make sure they don't hurt themselves. In the morning, they supposedly don't remember anything.

thanks for the info...but im still alittle confused....if i go in her room and she sees me she wants me to hold her so it makes the situation worse. could it be that shes just scared and/or having bad dreams?! there were a few times she looked sleeping but awake it was weird, hard to explain...

Re: anyones child experiencing night terrors?
My son had night terrors alot - 3-4 times a week sometimes - and it was near impossible to wake him. He was very agitated and although his eyes were closed, he fought you if you tried to soothe him. He would scream in a really disturbing way. My DH was much better at handling them than me in terms of trying to soothe him (even though it didnt really work, of course we tried), it was very hard to see him so upset and feel like there was nothing that was helping calm him. They began when he was around 2 1/2 and he stopped getting them so much last fall. He turned 4 in Oct so I'd say he has pretty much grown out of them by then. He will occasionally have them when he has particularly stimulating days. This past Christmas Eve night and Christmas night he had them both nights bc of all the excitement. HTH

Re: anyones child experiencing night terrors?
Sound like your daughter may have the start of nightmares. I thought my son might have terrors but when I read up nit I realized he was having night mares. He remembers his dreams to a point and he is fully awakened by them. He is scared! I read that I should comfort him for night mares, but not terrors. So I do. His dreams are finally subsiding a bit, but they are cyclic. Also, according to Solve your child sleep problems by ferber, nightmares can be directly relatd to day time stress. (My sons dreams got worse with potty training.)
Good luck. Hope it gets better quickly.

thank you so much...i also now think its nightmares and have been backtracking our day to try and see a difference in our daily routine and schedule but i just cant think of anything...my daughter is only 18 months, i wish i knew what scared her! she does talk alot but obviously is too young to tell me what happend...i will bring it up at the dr in a few weeks. or i may end up getting impatient and call him sooner..did you find when you comforted your son did he have a hard time going back to sleep without you? thats whats been happing to us and i try so hard not to go in the room but she just seems way to scared to let her cry back to sleep.
