Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
The Gastro called me this am because the stool sample she took had blood in it. We went in for a sonogram, the dr has to review it, I should know the results later today. She also switched DD from Nutramigen to Elecare. She gave me a sample can to try over the weekend and I just looked it up..it's not even available over the counter!! You have to order it online, over the phone or ask your pharmacist to special order it! It's for severe allergies or gastro issues. It's also VERY VERY expensive..which I will deal with, but $ucks! I have to call my insurance to see if they cover it, because some do.
anyone's DC have/had to be on this? Where did you get it? Did your insurance cover it?
Poor DD, I feel like she's way too young (only 4 weeks) to have all these tummy issues!

Re: Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
Ryan is on it. Has been since about 3 months. Our union pays for it, so we just have to buy it and then they reimburse us... thank god. We did A LOT of research to find the cheapest price and found the website babywuv.com has it the cheapest by the case. The price fluctuates, right now the case is $140.99. There are 6 cans of powder in the case. DS is now drinks about 24-32 oz. a day and the case usually lasts us about 12-14 days.

Re: Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
My DS is on elecare since three weeks ago and knock on wood doing better. I'm in CT and my insurance is guardian and they cover it, but I had to call back a couple of times to get the right person to help me and they had to call the doctor to get the presciption. I got information from Elecare's website that said if its medically necessary they are required to cover it in CT. My insurance ships it to me through a third party, I guess they get a better price from them. Before that I got a couple of cans from Walgreens to start with. DS was 10 weeks when we started and really didn't like the taste at first, but after a couple of days he got used to it and started eating is full bottles again. Good Luck.

My husband went to pick it up, I think it's behind the pharmacy desk. I called three walgreens until I found one that had in stock the Elecare with DHA. I'm in CT so it may be different. You can always ask them to order it.

Re: Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
If you live in NY and are insured with prescription drug coverage, and it is deemed medically necessary, the insurance company is mandated to provide it to you. We paid nothing for our DS's Elecare for an entire year. You must have the GI fill out the forms and send them in. Our insurance company insisted we were not covered when we were.
The link below is from the Elecare site. Click on New York and you will see the mandate on page 10 of the document. Elecare is an enteral formula and that is the category on the document you might need to quote to your insurance company.
Good Luck

Re: Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
Chloe was put on it around that time as well.
We had to send paperwork into the insurance, but they cover it now, its $100 co pay a month for a months supply, I get it at CVS, they order it for me.
Most insurancies will cover it, if you live in NY you are usually covered under the NYS mandate that says it must be covered ( unless your insurer is a group that is not affected by the mandate. )

Re: Anyone's DC on Elecare Formula?
DS has been on it since he was 1-2 months old. Insurance should definitely cover it. It's in NYS Law that if your child has one of a list of issues (I forget all of them) like GERD, failure to thrive... they have to cover it. We had to appeal 3 times before they covered it.
Which reminds me... does anyone need any elecare? We have a big back stock that we just realized a few days ago expires in Aug. DS will never finish by then- sorry didn't mean to hijack, I will start another thread.
