Re: Anyone's DC refuse to blow their nose??

honestly a stuffy nose is nothing more than an annoyance, it's not bad for her health i don't think (i am not a doctor so feel free to correct me if you think i am wrong) so i would just leave her alone... if she gets uncomfortable enough she'll blow her nose.

Kaila is a little over 3 and she doesnt blow her nose either, and it drives me crazy lol. She would rather suck them back in then blow them out!!!

I use the aspirator still, but it doesnt work as well as it used to.

Thanks guys.. I'm just worried about her sucking it all back in and it getting into her lungs... or her getting an ear infection from it... I guess I will just watch her and make sure she keeps wiping it at least. Chat Icon

What about trying saline drops? That will at least loosen the stuff up to maybe make some of it run out.

Just the thought of propelling snot out of my nose grosses me out...I always worry about there being remnants on my nose and not knowing it Chat Icon Chat Icon Seriously, that's my mental block Chat Icon

Can you make a game out of it? My son loves to be a "big boy" so he learned to blow his nose at like 17 months old Chat Icon But Im also a bit obsessive, I cannot Cannot STAND seeing little kids with nasty snot hanging out of their noses...( I know Its mean of me...but I blame the parents not the kids when they are really young Chat Icon ...like the under 2 group)
Anyway, can you do like " how hard can you blow" and you do it too and see who wins, make something fun and gross out of it? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Anyone's DC refuse to blow their nose??

Oh I wanted to add that when we had Noahs EI eval....the Evaluator showed me how the " blwoing nose" skill was in the 7 yr old category...so it IS a more advanced thing for a kid...

How did you teach Noah? I have been trying to teach DS who will be 3 in 2 weeks and he inhales instead of blowing out. I have showed so many times since was congested for 2 weeks but he can't get the hand of it.

I am also the same way about wiping their noses. It drives me nuts.

How did you teach Noah?

Honestly, it was more him "copying" then teaching. He copies everything we do all day long from wiping our hands to blowing our nose.

So DH has BAD BAD allergies and blows his nose CONSTANTLY...and I guess Noah watched him and started to "pretend" by wiping it and throwing out the tissue.

So DH Told him "Blow" and made the scrunched up nose kinda trick and was showing himw how to blow with his mouth and to do it with his nose and he got it within like the 3rd try.

Not ALL the "goods" come out when he does it, but its funny to watch...except when he has a runny nose we go through like 5 rolls of paper towels b/c as a toddler he likes to do it again and again and again.

like I was saying above, the EI evaluator didnt seem to believe me so I had Noah show her...and he put this whole "act" on of getting the towel, standing there, blowing, throwing the towel out. its cute.

Isn't it obvious?

Re: Anyone's DC refuse to blow their nose??

We taught Bella pretty early on how to blow her nose...i think before a year or so she was doing it.

She had started to get really runny one day (and it lasted for about 3 weeks!)and I was sick of using my shirt Chat Icon to wipe it, so we just started.

She's really great about it now. In fact, if she's stuffy and having a hard time breathing we'll ask if she has to blow her nose and she'll say yes.

Just practice. And let them see you blowing your nose. That really helped us out.
