Anyone's dog get car sick?
My dog gets sick everytime we take him in the car. He sits and drools uncontrolalbly (he is a Bullmastiff), foams at the mouth and then finally just starts heaving and throws up like 3 times. Once we stop, he jumps out and is fine. I thought dogs loved car rides?

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
My girl gets sick in teh car. She is so afraid. We have been taking her since she was a pup, same as my boy dog, yet he loves the car.
How do we solve it? It's ridiculous but one of us has to sit with her and hold her while she is in her carseat (they have doggie carseats). We have to make sure she is laying down and we put our arm around her so her body doesn't rock, and she almost never gets sick. I think she throws up from the nervousness due to the movement and that's why when one of us comforts her she is fine.
It's so annoying. My vet told me I can give her somethng for it, but most rides are so short that I would not give her anything just for that, when if one of us sits with her, it can be prevented.

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
my dog gets sick in the car, he has thrown up in the past, but now he just has bad diarrhea when we get to wherever we are going - usually no more than 10 minutes away. the only thing that helps is giving him a tranquilizer but for a 10 minute ride we hate to do that.

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
My Dog EVERYTIME Even if we just drive around the block. He does the same thing drools excessively & then he just gets this look & his cheeks puff & then you have about 2 seconds & then
Sometimes he will make it to the destination but as soon as he gets out of the car he gets sick. It is so sad. We tried kenneling him instead of having him loose but it only worked once.
I feel so bad for him because he seems to enjoy looking out the window & is always happy once we get where we are going. But he never WANTS to go in the truck. Even when I walk him he doesn't want to walk to close to a parked car & I think its because he thinks we are going in it.

Casey is the EXACT same way. She's slightly better now (she's almost 4) but for her first few years we had to give her a tranquilizer to make long car trips. Even now, she absolutely hates it but we don't need to give her meds...she does drool though. I read somewhere that some dogs get an inner ear imbalance that causes them to get sick in cars.

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
My doberman got carsick...there was nothing we could do about it. Even the short trip to the vet would make him vomit....we just didn't take him many places for that reason. He would also be fine as soon as he got out of the car.
Every dog is different, Misty would live in the car if she could. She has no problem whatsoever.

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
Thanks guys! So I guess it's just something we have to deal with. We don't take himin the car often. But sometimes when I go see my parents in Westchester I like to bring him. I usually don't feed him until after the car trip. He has had several successful trips, it's just a coin toss if he will get sick. Most of the time he does. We started taking him to Blydenburgh and its only a 5-7 minute drive so he is ok. We haven't put him in the dog run yet, we are afraid LOL. He is a big gentle mush, but when he wants a dog to play with him he tries to chew its ears or he nips it. When he plays with my BIL's dog (Boston Terrier 1/4 my dogs size!) we pay it no mind cuz we know he is playing and has NEVER left a mark or hurt him or drew blood, but a stranger may not like it done to their dog! He actually takes Spike's (Boston Terrier) neck in his mouth, but puts no pressure. Spike then jumps up and takes him down. My dog is a Bullmastiff as I mentioned and submits to this lil Boston Terrier. Spike steals his toys and my Brody just lies there and watches him play with them. So if any of you see me coming at Blydenburgh, don't panic! LOL he looks mean but he isn't!

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
Dogs foam at the mouth when they are anxious so that sounds like the cause. Have you tried just driving around the block with him? Or even just sitting in the car for a few minutes? This was actually on the Family Pet last week. Marc was saying just trying sitting in the car with them in the driveway so they can get over the anxiety. Then move up to the car running, then a quick trip around the block. The dog park is a very exciting place for them, Katie always foams at the mouth as soon as she gets there. If he associates the dog park with the car, or the vet, it could definitely give him anxiety.

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
We were thinking it was nerves/anxiety as opposed to just getting nauseous. We just weren't sure because he relly isn't afraid of anything. And he has a few times jumped into the car when we weren't even going anyplace. We'll keep takinghim on little spurts and see how he does. Thanks all!

Re: Anyone's dog get car sick?
My middle girl, Blue, gets car sick AND LOVES THE CAR- in the begining she would get sick but as she got older she started to face the back seat and keep her head down or stradle the "hump" of the backseat floor and have her paws over the center console and look forward- she is 75lbs and not about to miss going on a car ride, my other 2 girls are fine in the car-Good Luck!
