Anyone's dog suffer from allergies?

Poor Dottie has been really itchy. No fleas, thank god. But after all the research I've been doing, it seems like her breed is prone to allergies.

I have a few things I'm going to try (change her food, use a hypo allergenic shampoo). Someone suggested children's benedryl.

Has anyone used this for their dog?

Thanks!!

ETA: I also just purchased the allergy kit from Drs. Fosters Smith. It's a supplement/vitamin as opposed to a drugl. I don't want to get into the habbit of giving her medicine, especially anything w/ steroids. I'd rather try viatmins

Allergy Kit

Has anyone tried this?

I'll let you all know how it works.

My friend has a boxer with ridiculous skin allergies. I think they give him a holistic food high in omega's, they give him poached eggs in the morning, and use tea tree oil shampoo.

Re: Anyone's dog suffer from allergies?

My male boxer has pretty bad allergies and we tried everything. The first few times he broke out with bumps all over his back we took him to the vet, she gave him a shot of steriods, steriods to take for 10 days and a shampoo. It cleared up right away but came back again. So again the vet gave him steriods, we really didnt want to keep giving him steriods so we starting trying other things. We tried the dr.fosters allergy kit and benedryl, it seemed to help a little but not much. We finally started trying different foods and found one that worked. He is now on Canidae and his allergies are almost all gone, no more scratched red chest and he stopped chewing his paws.

I love Canidae. I gave it to my Chinese Crested when she was a very small pup. She was allergic to everything her first few months.

My doggie has been itching like crazy, and so far the only thing that seems to work is getting a cortisone shot at the vet Chat Icon The effects last for over a month, and then she starts itching again. We've changed her food, we got special prescription shampoo, we bathe and comb her often per vet's intructions, and she doesn't have fleas... I don't know what else to do!

YES!!!! My dog(American Bulldog) turned 5 yesterday and I have yet to figure her out. The Doctors Foster & Smith kit didn't help us. Right now we have her on **** Van Pattens Vegeterian Formula food and use hypoallergenic shampoo. Steroids help tons but I refuse to keep her on them for a long period of time. For us frequent baths help soothe her. Good Luck I totally feel your pain! Chat Icon

Yes, my English bulldog has several skin allergies. I haven't tried the kit. I am just very careful of what she eats.
