Anyone's infant spit-up A LOT?

We call my dd the spit-up queen..its getting out of control..i'm so tired of changing her outfits a million times a day and having her spit up all over me and my clothes too..not to mention ruining some of hers. Doctors say its normal and some babies spit up more than others...she is gaining weight nicely and doesn't seem to be in any real discomfort so they aren't concerned

Just wondering if anyone has any tips to alleviate this..its really starting to drive me insane!

Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? I ask because we switched my DD from powder formula to the ready to feed one and her spit up has been reduced by like 90%. She use to spit up at least 5-6 times, per bottle. We switched to different powder formulas, bottles...nothing worked. Then, DH's friend told us to try the ready to feed formula and it's been great. We give her the Similac Sensitve for Spit up one.

DS1 was a happy spitter. He'd spit up even hours after a feeding. He wore bibs constantly and I was always holding a burp cloth. It was annoying, but he wasn't uncomfortable. He outgrew it around 7 months. I think starting solids helped.

DS2 has reflux and is uncomfortable when spitting up. He's on Zantac now. It doesn't help with the spitting up, but at least he's no screaming during and after feedings now.

Oh...I totally feel your pain. I used to almost hate feeding time because I'd anticipate formula all over the place.
And since you've been giving her the RTF formula already, have you tried giving her powder formula? I read that sometimes babies who spit up with RTF, don't spit up with powder and vice versa.

Re: Anyone's infant spit-up A LOT?

We switehce to an AR formula and it reduced it a lot.
She used to do what I called volcano vomitting.
Like the whole bottle would just pour right back out of her mouth sometimes.
The AR is a bit thcker and helped reduced that.
Also make sure you are using slow flow nipples- if they take in too much too fast they tend to spit it back up

Same with my DD. We took her to 2 Ped GIs and there was nothing they could do. She grew out of it around 7-8 months.

How old is she? DD spit up a good amount for sometime, so the doctor told us to start putting 1/2 a teaspoon of cereal in her bottle 3x per day and its made a huge different....
She'll be 4 months old tomorrow...

From my experience, there is nothing you can do. My DS was a happy spitter and spit up all day every day until 12 months! Around 9 mos he was prescribed Zantac to neutralize the stomach acids, but it doesn't stop the spitting, unfortunately.

Ugh! I remember those days! Hang in there...hope it's over soon!

MY DS spits up all the time. He is a happy spitter. We give his the powder Similac Sensitive. We tried Nutramigen and that was a disaster. It sucks but I am just letting him spit up and waiting for him to grow out of it.

My DS is the same way. He's still only 4 months and we haven't started solids yet but I'm hoping there's an end in sight.

here are some things we did:
switched to RTF
held her upright for 20+ minutes after each feeding, and if possible, spent another 15+ minutes in the RNP afterwards
used slow flow nipples
did not heat up the formula (gave it at room temparature - we bought the 8 ounce RTF formula containers, so most bottles didnt require that the formula be heated)

I feel your pain!!!!

My twins spit up ALOT no one believed me until they saw it. We once went to the doctor and between the 2 of them they spit up 15+ times while we were there.

The doctors (I asked all of them in the practice) all said the same thing...as long as they are gaining weight and not bothered by it meds are not needed. It is just more work for you.

I tried changing formulas, keeping them upright and still after they ate and it still happened. It could be 1 minute after they ate or 2 hours after they ate without warning!!

I was changing their sheets at least 3 times a day! Forget about clothes...its warm if you are home diaper and bib. I used to put down a plastic table cloth with a blanket over it on the rug so they didn't ruin it.

They outgrew it around 10 or 11 months once they were really moving around and their core/trunk got stronger. It was like it happened over night

Starting solids didn't help. just made it messier!

Re: Anyone's infant spit-up A LOT?

DD is 6 months and is a big spitter also! She is EBF and has started solids. I thought it would stop a little, but no, still going strong! I just asked the ped at her checkup on wednesday and he said that it could continue until she is a year old!Chat Icon It is better than when she was a NB though, I used to joke that people needed to sign a waiver before holding her!

Re: Anyone's infant spit-up A LOT?

Looks like I am going against all of the other replies here but DD was a HUGE spitter - never complained but it turned out she had reflux - her only real symptom was spitting up hours after she ate.

She was put on Zantac which actually made her spit up more if you can believe that. We switched her to axid and it made a world of difference! I could tell when she was gaining weight and her dose needed to be adjusted because she would start spitting again.

Before we had her on the axid, I was changing her clothes and mine multiple times a day.

DS was a "happy spitter" as well. Switching to Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up (RTF bottle w/green label) helped tremendously.

my dd spit up until she was 13mths - but she was happy.

My sister in law used enfamil AR - its a thickened formula and it reduced the spit up to very little

DD spit up ALL the time! We had to put a bid around her almost 24/7 because she would spit up all day. She always had a lot of gas and when we switched her to Similac Sensitive, it made a difference but didn't stop completely. Eventually though she just stopped.
