Anywhere else we should add to our search?
DH and I are beginning (very slowly!) to look for a house. I feel like we are limiting ourselves because we love the town we currently live in now but we are becoming frustrated because we are only looking in one place. We would prefer to stay on the South Shore but we are also looking at towns a bit north. We would like to stay in Suffolk. We cannot go too far out east because DH commutes to the city. So far on our list we have:
West Islip
Bay Shore
Islip
East Islip
Islip Terrace
Oakdale
West Sayville
Sayville
Holbrook
Holtsville
Are there any other towns we should add to our list? Thanks!

If you're looking at Holbrook area, and DH takes the train, you should look at Ronkonkoma as well. It's the Ronkonkoma line, and there are parts of Ronkonkoma that are south of the LIE. Connetquot School District, which IMO, is a very nice district.

If you're looking at Holbrook area, and DH takes the train, you should look at Ronkonkoma as well. It's the Ronkonkoma line, and there are parts of Ronkonkoma that are south of the LIE. Connetquot School District, which IMO, is a very nice district.
Thanks! I forgot about Ronkonkoma! I don't know anything about the area, but what about Lake Ronkonkoma?

ITA with Ronkonkama. Holtsville is pretty far east. I grew up around there and it's a hike into the city.

Lake Ronkonkoma is North and East of Lake Ronkonkoma. Sachem School District, Town of Brookhaven. Ronkonkoma is Town of Islip. It's almost entirely north of the LIE, which is why I didn't mention it. I would add it to your search, though. Most towns on LI merge into each other, so there's no real separation between towns, especially near the edges. One side of a street can be one town, and the other side is a different town.

Thanks. Holtsville is farthest east we would go. I left it up to DH because it was his commute and he came up with a couple of train stations he would be able to go to, so maybe he should give it a test run before we seriously look there.

Blue Point is a very cute town and just over from sayville. He can commute from Ronkonkoma

How about the Babylons?
I do not know a ton about them, but I thought they might fit with your search.
I agree that Babylon would be worth a look. Cute town, and great to be on Babylon train line with express trains to Babylon from Penn.
I think recommendations would depend on budget, school district crIteria, etc, but you could also look into West Babylon or Lindenhurst. They are also on the Babylon train line, which is one of the best for city commuters, IMO.
Also, maybe Farmingdale, which straddles the Nassau/Suffolk border. Part of Farmingdale goes to Half Hollow Hills.

Babylon. For me to commute from LI to the city, the furthest east I would live is Babylon. I work in lower Manhattan too. Maybe I would be willing to live further if I worked right by Penn Station.
Where in the city does your DH work? And do you currently live in Suffolk? Only because some of your towns and the ones that people are recommending are very inconvenient to travel to Manhattan to on a daily basis. My DH did the commute from Ronkonkoma to lower Manhattan- an hour and 40 each way. And he only had to drive 5 minutes to the train station. But if he is already doing the commute and doesn't mind, then don't mind me!

Thanks for the suggestion! We currently live a little further east of Babylon, DH works in Midtown Manhattan. We've discussed it at length, DH is used to the hour and 20 minute commute as it is. I've left it up to him as far as how east we'd go. Maybe he should test out commuting from Ronkonkoma one day and see what it's like.

Definitely not the Port Jeff line lol. That would like about 18 hours : ). We live in Setauket and DH drives to Ronkonkoma because the Port Jeff line is so bad. Ronkonkoma isn't bad at all. If you travel during rush hour some trains are only 80 minutes. I did it for 16 years. They also have alot of free parking which sometimes is hard to find on the Babylon line unless you live in the specific town. All the areas mentioned above are great to look at.

You will probably want to look at houses in the Sachem part of lake grove since it's the closest to the Ronkonkoma train station. Also wanted to add Farmingville especially close to the expressway since it will cut your commute to the train station.

As a former commuter, as others have said, the best lines for commuting from suffolk are either the ronkonkoma line or babylon line.
I would just try and be mindful of the actual stations he would be looking to commute from because parking availablity and parking fees vary.

No. Ronkonkoma is Connetquot. Lake Ronkonkoma (same zip code, but technically different township) is Sachem.
