Apartment Dwellers
How much would you say on average is your electric bill per month?
Mine is currently included in my rent and DH and I are looking for a new apartment for various reasons...chances are we will have to pay for it at our new place.
I am scared....especially in the summer....and especially since DH has never had to pay for electric in his life.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
ALOT
in the summer- I was getting bills over $175 for a junior 4 with 2 A/C and no one running them during the day
my average winter bill was $75
LIPA is so expensive- my rent includes electric now and I am loving it - I am scared for when we buy a house
but LIPA offered me the balanced billing program for $107 a month
the first year we lived there is was alot less then the second year- LIPA added all these new surcharges

I am in Queens (not sure if that makes a difference since you mentioned LIPA)
Seriously I think I am going to cry but I think its time to pay electic like a big girl so I wont.
I think I could live with the $107 balance thing a month - I just dont want a huge one in the summer months you know what I mean?

This was ours as well. I think once the electric went over $100 because of the AC's. But we didn't have our own washer and dryer - just a dishwasher.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We pay about $50 a month during the fall/winter.
During the summer, ours was near $100/125 when we ran both A/C units in the LR and BR, plus a fan.
Where are you looking to rent? Our 1 BR apt will be avail quite soon once we get a closing date.
ETA: Laundry is located in laundry facility across the way (we live in a complex and it's attached to the building across the parking strip) and we have D/W that we run every other day with heat dry.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
First year I paid monthly - it was CHEAP - like $20/mo. Then in the summer it reached as much as $150/mo.
Then Idid a balanced budget - and it was $57/mo.
Now we have a similar situation to you - it is included in the rent and in the summer we pay $50/mo extra for the A/C

con-ed might be alittle better- I had them when I lived in Manhattan- but that was before gas prices went thru the roof-
I had a dishwasher- and a DH who likes the A/C on high and on April thru Oct
but b/c the apartment was a junior 4- 1 bed room with a diningroom and a 25 foot long living room- it took alot to cool the room down

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We have a 2 BR Apt, and had 3 air conditioners this summer. Our bill was about $170 a month over the summer, and averages about $65 a month over the winter. Considering the summer only lasts at most 3 months, I deal with extra cost for the short time period.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We're in a 3 BR in Queens and I think our last bill was about $65. In the summer, I think it was about $100. We definitely don't use the AC as much as most people, though and we don't have electric heat. We just started getiing metered recently.
ETA: We have a dishwasher too.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We got our first bill last month, the landlord had been paying it.
Ours is a bit high because I have my orchidarium running 2 fans and 6 lights for 14 hours a day, even when we're not home. It was $99.00.

Oh, I'm relieved. I thought I was the only one who had a DH who liked that. I mean by Columbus day, I think it is time to shut it off

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We are in BK and have about 850 sq ft. We do not use AC that much in the summer and we have gas for heat and cooking. No D/W and no W/D in the apartment. I just paid the Con Ed bill (balanced plan) and it was $119. It was around $87 for a long time but jumped up in the last year or so.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We have ConEd. For a 1 br its about $50 in the fall/winter/spring, but in the summer it soars to about $150. We run the AC nearly all the time though.
When my parents were renting their 2 br, it was about the same $50 or so during the fall/winter/spring. They weren't insane with the AC, so their summer bills weren't as high as ours.

Re: Apartment Dwellers
we have balance billing
we were 92 a month but we just dropped to 72 a month.
The balanced billing is great. It is the same evry month but at the end of the year you will either have a credit or owe money
I like knowing exactly what the bill is each month. The summer you use the most but the winter balances it out

Re: Apartment Dwellers
We pay $40 in the Winter for our 1B....In the Summer, it's about double, $85. We have 2ACs and keep them running a lot in the summer It's not really as bad as I thought it was going to be.
