Re: apartment rentals
We were 6 months away from our wedding when we signed our lease which is the top of a very large two family house. I made it a point to tell our landlord that we were in fact engaged. He has three teenaged daughters living in his home below us and I am pretty sure he would not have leased an apartment to a couple that did not have intent to marry.

Re: apartment rentals
Our landlord didn't care but I know other people who don't want unmarried couples because there is a greater chance of them breaking up and one of them not being able to afford the rent.
It probably happens a lot. People who aren't going out for very long who decide to move in together and it doesn't work out when you're with someone that much.
I suppose if I got burned once, I'd probably feel the same. There's just no way to tell if your tenant is going to royally scr*w you in the end.

true i see your point, but what if either one was more than capable to afford the rent on their own if one chose to move out. a lot of things can happen other than breakups, there can be a job transfer to another state, god forbid a death, etc. so why discriminate right off the bat?

Re: apartment rentals
everyone is different. I have rented for years and I have gotten reponses of no single, single older, married, etc. I even had a preson be ok with a dog or cat but not a caged bunny
When DH and I found our place we were not even engaged and they had no question about it.

Re: apartment rentals
i noticed some landlords discriminating against us too b/c we were unmarried and not engaged. we decided to use a broker (who got us a great deal) and they pre-approve you financially. we showed them that independantly we were capable of paying if the other moved out. luckily, our landlord didn't care.
