The Droid is Verizon's competition to Apple's newest IPhone. So far, here's what I've learned about both the phones and the service providers...as I've been looking to compare contrast both of them.
~IPhone has many more Apps(presumably because it's an older system).
~Droid has trouble downloading music from your PC/Mac to the phone. It doesn't sync to your computer's music library.
~Droid has significantly better tower coverage than At&T
~Droid is the outcome of the two giants Google and Verizon teaming up against Apple and At&T
~Droid has an awesome voice/data/GPS feature that allows you to look for any store in your GPS range simply by saying "Pizza Place". You'll get the full Google Listing of Pizza places within a certain square mileage of your GPS location. IPhone can't do this.
~AT&T's contract with Apple as exclusive provider expires next year 2010. Although they extended their last contract, because of the Droid, they may not do it again.
~At&T has rollover minutes, Verizon doesn't.
~Droid has a 5 MP camera, IPhone has 3.
Can anyone else add some more?

i have the droid eris... the smaller one.
i love it!
the downside:
iphone has many more apps than non-iphones
the only issue i've had with it is that you need the task killer app. sometimes, the apps stay open and it slows down. as soon as i got that app, it's been smooth sailing.
pros:
the calls are really clear
verizon techs will teach you how to use it for free... i like this very much

I actually went to Verizon in Roosevelt Field mall today and was playing witht the two droids. I like the smaller one because I don't think I need the keyboard. Didn't see any other reason to like the bigger one better.
The sales guy there had the phone himself and let DH play with it extensively. DH has the iPhone. He said the apps are there, but not as many as iPhone, not even close. The blackberry storm has been out a while and I feel there should be a TON of apps now and am surprised there isn't a lot more. The guy said I can see the apps on the droid site, will have to check that out.
I REALLY like the iPhone but EVERYONE I know is on Verizon except for DH that is why it is a tough call for me.

Although it isn't a built in feature, DHs iPhone has apps that can do this. All sorts of places like gas stations, hospitals, sushi places. You name it, they can suggest a place.

I would much rather have an Iphone than the Droid... having said that.... I will not switch out of my Verizon contract and go with ATT....
My husband has the Droid and it IS a very good phone... yes there are a lot less apps than the Iphone but the major ones that you need are all there.... I just like how responsive the Iphone is and all its cool features... If Iphone was with Verizon I would have definately bought that phone RIGHT away.... but the Droid is definately a good competitor!

I got the Droid about 3 weeks ago and I like it but I don't love it. I really wanted iPhone but switching to AT&T wasn't an option for me -- pretty much everyone I speak to is on Verizon.

I was a verizon subscriber till this summer and switched to iPhone and LOVE IT.
I live on the East End, I have NO problems with service. I have had 2 dropped calls in 5 months. Thats it... so I don't believe the service is inferior at all.
-I can get internet while I am talking on the phone to someone
-Send / Receive Emails
-Use free app "WHERE" and get anything I could possibly be looking for in a matter of seconds- From Starbucks, to pizza, to Thai food, or even a Hallmark store.
-Watch Movies
-Download Music (no longer carry an iPod)
-Have a Kindle feature (for eBooks)
-Get directions ( no longer need a GPS)
-The battery life is LONGER than a droid
-Lots of Games to play for free
-My text looks like an AIM converstation (and I have AIM also)
-My calendar is synced to my phone and home desk top
-My Contacts have ALL information from address, to phone and email. With a touch of an app I can get directions from the exact location I am at to ANY ONE in my contacts, with MAPS and also step by step directions
AT&T is NOT giving up the contract with iPhone, that is a rumor.
My best friend switched from a Blackberry to a Droid, and was happy he didn't sell his BB on ebay, he went back to BB after 2 weeks, he HATED the driod.
I love love love my iPhone. I was leary at first, and I will NEVER switch back.

DH has the iPhone, I have the Droid. I like them both equally, pretty much. I do like that the Droid has the slide-out keypad, although I don't use it too often. Plus there are many more apps for the iPhone but I haven't gotten around to DLing all the free ones for the Droid so i don't know if the ones for the iPhone are necessarily better.
The only really big differences so far that I have noticed are:
1. better service for the Droid, especially in an area where there is no Wifi and we need 3G service to connect to the internet  Plus I have fewer dropped calls than he does.
2. I can post on LIF, he can't  He has tried and gotten the same error I did when I had my LG Voyager.
3. The Droid is a little heavier/thicker.
4. With the iPhone, you can restore your phone through iTunes.

I am not sure why Google would even be involved with this. That's like Microsoft trying to bid on Apple.
If anything, Google would be HIGHLY AGAINST Verizon bidding on the iPhone because if Verizon gets the iPhone, that will significantly cut into Google's profits.
Like I said, the iPhone service is a cash cow for AT&T. You don't give that up. Anything that Verizon bids, AT&T will bid higher.
And haven't you seen all those nasty commercials Verizon is rolling out attacking the iPhone and AT&T's service? Do you really think Apple is going to just sit back and forget about it when it comes time to re-negotiate their contract?
Plus Verizon would have to bid significantly more than AT&T to win the service for the iPhone. The iPhone is designed for GSM networks and Verizon will only run CDMA. To make a CDMA capable iPhone would require quite a bit of money spent on redesigning the iPhone internals.
Sorry Verizon users, but you are pretty much NEVER going to see the iPhone on Verizon. By the time Verizon gets the iPhone, it will be so outdated Apple will be on their next best thing.

The only reason that I theorized that AT&T could be outbid is because Verizon and Google have formed a partnership to create then launch the Droid together. It is a joint endeavor. So, it's really not like Microsoft bidding on Apple...because they are not partners. Verizon and Google are both mammoth companies and together I think they may be hard to top. I don't see At&T as having the resources to outbid them....if it came down to it. I could be wrong and that would be ok too!

I agree and it's the only thing keeping AT&T afloat. They would give their right arms to keep it.

I don't have either but my husband who is in IT said that if the Iphone crashes, it is a PITA to reboot-you have to resync it to a computer, whereas most other phones you just pull the battery out.

Love, Love, Love my iphone.
A friend of mine looked at the droid since she knows how much I love the iphone and she went with the blackberry instead. She didn't like it.
Major issue for her was the camera. A software glitch does not allow the focus to work on a cyclical 24/25 day cycle. There is rumored to be an update this week, but it is unconfirmed.

Yes but again this scenario isn't really realistic.
Google is a mammoth company, but why would they want Verizon to get the iPhone? They should be against it. Google is trying to develop their own phone operating system to COMPETE with the iPhone. The last thing they would want is for Verizon to give their users the option of iPhone vs. Droid.
