applying for jobs during pregnancy..
I currently work for a great company with benefits and great people around me. I love what I do and the work I am surrounded in.
With that being said, I've been looking around on these job websites and have considered applying for other jobs pretty much just to make more money. I know my happiness would definitely be sacrificed, but being almost 7 months pregnant and stressing out over bills/money, I'm thinking about sending out some resumes in seeking a position that pays more. Its not that my DH and I can't afford this baby with his job and my current job or anything, its just that I would like some more extra money left over at the end of the month.
Does anyone think that because I am 7 months pregnant and plan on going on maternity leave the last week of May that I would even seriously get hired anywhere else? Should I not even bother seeking out a new position and stay where I am? Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on what to do or have been in this similar situation? Thanks gals!

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
I am in the same position, somewhat. I don't have a good job though. Just per diem work during the school year and bartending which I am leaving within a few weeks. Anyhow, I think it will be difficult to find a job within 2 months, you also probably won't be eligible for the maternity leave (isn't FMLA after working somewhere for 12 months). I would keep looking and maybe sending resumes but if you have a good maternity leave at your job I would do the serious job hunting during that time when you will be looking to start a new job without interruption.
I know it's illegal to discriminate against pregnant women but the truth is, they probably won't consider us the number one candidates

I'm actually going through this right now. I actually got laid off from my job back in November, (October 30th, actually!) And, that same day is when I got pregnant. Well, 4 months later and really showing, I can see the disappointment in the employers face when then see me in person...pregnant (since legally I don't have to disclose it). They see an employee that will be out at least 6 weeks. Not good for the company, in their mind. Luckily everyone has been polite in their emails declining me for the position. But, it is frustrating. I have held back on applying for jobs, unless I see something that is exactly what I would want, instead of just getting a job to have a paycheck.
So, my suggestion would be to stay where you are right now, unless you see something that fits besides just the money. And go for it. But, part of me wants to say, wait untill the baby is here. If your job is flexible and stress free, it might be the best fit for a new mommy. And, that may out weigh the extra money you could be making in the long run. A stressfree job while being a mom is definitely a plus.

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
i know how u feel.. i'm also going through this.. although it's a little different.. i'm due in august and i'm a school administrator... so anyone who hires me does so knowing i will not be at work for the first of the year.. what good is an assistant principal who can't come to work the first day of school?
i've pretty much just stopped looking until at least after the baby is born.. i figure i'll try in the fall...

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
One word of caution - if you plan to take maternity leave and be covered under FMLA, you need to be at your current job for one year.
Now, not all companies have to comply with FMLA (it's based on company size), but it's something to think about if you are changing jobs during your pregnancy.
Good luck!

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
I am going through this right now. I am basically bored here at my job and will not return once this baby is born. I was looking for jobs but i have stopped for now b/c it just doesnt make sense to leave right now. I have maternity leave, plus paid vacation days, and sick days that i can use while i am off with the baby. So i will stick it out here until Sept. even though I wont want to.

I would be careful at 7 months pregnant, if you start a new job, your insurance might not kick in on time. I would stay where you are, especially if you are happy (besides the money) and look for something else to supplement your income, ebay, craig's list, retail. Happiness says a lot!

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
As everyone else has mentioned you need to be at work for 12 months or 1250 hours for FMLA to kick in.
At most employers you need to be working for some period of time before any additional STD benefit kicks in. At my Firm is 3 months for any benefits and a full year for a full benefit.
At 7 months it might be best to just stick it out and then start over fresh after your maternity leave has ended.

It's 12 months AND 1250 hours. If you're not eligible for FMLA, your job isn't protected. Also, if you're currently eligible for FMLA, your employer has to continue paying for your health insurance benefits during your leave(you're required to continue paying the same portion you had been paying). If I were you, I'd probably stick it out for the next few months.

Re: applying for jobs during pregnancy..
I think I am going to quit looking for jobs and stick it out til after the baby comes along. Im lucky enough that the company I work for is small and I still get the FMLA leave and I havent even been here a year. Funny enough, my due date is also the day i'd be at my job for one year. I also have good insurance. Thanks ladies.. i'm going to stop job hunting for now.. thanks for your advice ladies and knocking some common sense into my preggo brain!
