Job Seekers: Those considering/applying to city jobs
Have you heard anything yet?
I'm a little confused.
There are so many math jobs on the website that I have sent my resume in to and I haven't heard from ANY of them.
I have been applying for a few months now and can't believe I haven't gotten a phone call yet.
If I didn't go to the career fair last month I wouldn't have even had the 1 interview I had (and the one i was suppose to have).

Re: Job Seekers: Those considering/applying to city jobs
It's a hectic time of year- all the schools are dealing with graduations, updating records, looking at budgets, etc. I know at my school we are having issues with our budget and staffing, so my principal does not know what vacancies exist. It's all "projected" at the moment. And the priority now is to get the 8th graders' records in order to move with them to the high schools by the deadline, which takes a lot of time.

What do these schools do about demos? Do most city schools not do demos then?

I know that sometimes teachers do demos during summer school- but in my experience, they will hire people without demos. I got my job in my current school without doing one.

Re: Job Seekers: Those considering/applying to city jobs
i have a committment letter but i was told I wasn't restricted to the area I applied to because it is a shortage area.
I am hoping to obtain a position on my own so I wouldn't be placed in any left over spot. I figured it would be easy getting a job in the city, or at least easier than the island. I may be wrong here!

Re: Job Seekers: Those considering/applying to city jobs
It has gotten harder- I know my school used to have a lot of trouble getting teachers, even though it's a decent school. Now my principal gets resumes and has people randomly showing up pretty often. I think it's because the schools are somewhat more well-run and the salaries have gone up in recent years. Also, programs like Teach for America and the Teaching Fellows have created more competition for people taking the traditional route.
Also, the internet and sites like Inside Schools makes it much easier to identify well-run schools.
