Re: AR moms- whos babies are on Zantac
what kind of difference are you looking for? In my experience, Zantac doesn't help with the spitting up per say, just the way it feels when it comes up kwim? Babies are less fussy with it most of the time. But you may still have problems with weight gain if he is spitting up all the time

I think our weight gain issues are from him not nursing well... NOT from spitting up... (he goes days w/o spitting up at all)
Im hoping that the crying/fussing/discomfort at the breast stops... and he'll actually EAT

Re: AR moms- whose babies are on Zantac
well, it will definitly help with that. the acid from reflux burns when they swallow.. so they get fussy and don't want to eat. then they are hungry and even more fussy.

Re: AR moms- whose babies are on Zantac
depends on how badly his throat is by now if it's really bad (think eroded) it has to heal.. could take a couple of weeks. Hopefully as he stops having the AR it will stop being inflamed and work within a couple of days

Re: AR moms- whose babies are on Zantac
DD was on Zantac and was then changed to Prilosec b/c the Zantac wasn't helping. She has also had weight gain issues due to so much spitting up. My GI doc told me that he wasn't surprised that it wasn't helping b/c babies don't usually reflux due to acid. He wouldn't take Erin off it yet b/c he didn't want to change too many things at once.
Erin also started going waaay too many hours between eating (7-10) and I asked if it was b/c she was starting to associate eating with spitting up and discomfort and he said that he didn't think so -- that she was too young to put those thoughts together since eating is an instinct for them.
But like a PP said, if the reflux is causing burning, then the Zantac should help in just a couple of doses.

Re: AR moms- whose babies are on Zantac
Zantac is basically an acid neutralizer. SO when they reflux it doesn't burn.
It didn't do a DARN thing for Alexa. It actually made her wired. Also, the thing that I thought was strange was that it is peppermint flavored and any type of mint is CONTRAINDICATED in people with reflux because it causes the sphincter muscle around the stomach to relax and leads to an increased chance in refluxing
Our specialist at Yale says its not a great med for reflux and isn't sure why SOOOOO many peds prescribe it as a first line medication. Maybe it has something to do with pharmeceutical companies and kickbacks $$$ Who knows.
ANy how, once we saw a specialist at Yale Alexa was put on Prevacid which is not only an acid neutralizer but ALSO helps to prevent an overproduction of stomach acid. We saw a SIGNIFICANT decrease in the volume and frequency of spit up on this medication. SHe has had no reactions while on this.
