Are breast pumps necessary to take to the hospital once you deliver?
Ive been reading that if you plan to breastfeed you should take a breast pump. Is that really necessary if the baby is going to be with you 24/7?

I'm not bringing mine. From what I understand, if it's necessary for you to pump in the hospital, they will provide you with a pump to use while you're there.

No. Definitely don't need to bring it. If all goes well with BF'ing you won't have a need to pump, and if you DID need a pump (latching issues, etc) the hospital will have what you need. You'll have enough stuff to bring to and from the hospital. Don't worry about the pump.

Definitely don't bring it. The hospital will give you a pump and all the supplies you need.

No. At my breastfeeding class (which was at the hospital I am delivering at), they said that if you need to pump, they will supply you with a breast pump you can use while you're admitted.

Absolutely not. You won't be able to pump in the beginning since your supply won't be substantial enough yet. Good luck!

Re: Are breast pumps necessary to take to the hospital once you deliver?
It's best to put the baby to the breast each time. The only time I felt like I *might* need to pump was my 4th night there (had a c/s) and my milk was coming in and I was getting engorged. But the nurses said they would bring me a pump if I needed it, and I ended up not since my newborn had a great latch and fed so often!

I am not bringing mine. I was told that if I need to pump they will provide me with one and I can ask to use one that the parts are compatible with my brand and then I get to take them home. It would certainly be nice to have an extra set of tubes.

No. If you need to pump, the hospital will provide one. As long as there are no issues, you should only work on BFing in the beginning and wait a few weeks before you start pumping.

Re: Are breast pumps necessary to take to the hospital once you deliver?
No. it wasn't necessary for me. I just would have them bring me to the baby at night to BF and she was basically with me all day. I did pump as soon as I got home and i think this helped because I never became engorged when my milk came in. No pain with that. I was pumping of BFing her every 2 hours, and this definitely helped my supply.
But at the hospital, I don't see a need, and they have pumps there if there was a need.
