Are LI social work salaries traditionally super low?
The job I have now is on LI but covers LI and NYC clients.
Anyways, I went on an interview yesterday for a Master's level position out in Suffolk and it was literally $30K less a year than I am making now.
I could understand $10K less but $30?!!!!
I don't know how people would survive on what they were offering, especially once they take out the cost of family health insurance!!!

Re: Are LI social work salaries traditionally super low?
I am not sure what everyone else makes but I graduated two years ago, and licensed. I know I could make at least 10k-20k more if i worked in a hospital. I work in a Day Program and love it too much to leave but I know I must be crazy. I interned at a hospital and hated it. The benefits are awesome which helps, for example I am reimbursed for almost all of my health insurance and other health related costs and the vacation time rocks. (its non- profit)

Yeah, that's the thing............I currently work for a large for-profit home care agency and I know I am not going to make as much as I am making now in most places. I also haven't taken the LMSW exam yet because I really haven't needed to (I prefer to do case management stuff---NOT clinical). I think it's coming to that though and I will have to bite the bullet and take the test. BTW, I think this might've been related to the population I interviewed for. It was an OMRDD MSC position. Everyone tells me too that I should get a job in a hospital. My thing though is I can't stand the bureacracy where I am now-----------I am sure it would be much worse in a hospital, especially since the focus is on insurance/discharges and I hear horror stories about SWs being supervised by crotchety old nurses that just want them to do the work "they" don't have time to do yada yada yada. (Not that what I have now is much better in that dept but at least my supervisor knows what he is doing well and advocates for me).

I don't think its so low that its not worth considering! ;o)
Nursing definitely makes more money but the field is so different! I wouldn't want to do it-I wouldn't be good at it!
good luck :)

Hi, I work with the OMRDD population but not as MSC. I do not do too much clinical but when I passed the exam I made more money anyway and retro-paid for the months I didn't have the license but was working with the company. I also have another job that is not social work but related and with the license I got a raise. So, it might be worth considering even if you do not want to do clinical.
good luck :)

I agree. As much as it is nice to pursue to help others - at the end of the day, you need to be able to survive and on LI - that salary is NO WHERE NEAR what it takes to cut it. JMO!
