How often do you do them? I would recommend doing pushups every other day and eventually it will get easier. It's like anything else- you're training your muscles.

Every single night. I do at least 20 modified ones. And free weights every single night.

You aren't allowing your body to recover by doing them every day. How many sets/reps do you do at once?
Do them after you warm up vs at the end of a workout

I do 10. Then crunches. Then 10 more. Just modified ones. I see a difference in my arms (more lean and some definition) but thy are still so hard! I can't ever imagine doing them the real way.

OMG I always wonder that! I've been feeling stronger since working out but push ups are my enemy! I'm awful at them!

Look up hand release pushps . They are better than on your knees and will help you gain strength. You can do push-ups and sit-ups every day without being over training. Especially if the nu her of reps is 20 or less.

Was just going to suggest these! So much better than the ones on your knees.

So I tried the hand release ones ... Couldn't do it. I have such poor upper body strength. Which is reason number 1 i am working out my arms (Reason 2 is because i want toned arms) Any other ideas? I'll still attempt them and work on them. I definitely see some definition when I flex... And the slightest definition when I'm not - like the top of my arms kind of look like a slight hill with dips. Very slight. So I'm getting somewhere, I guess.

What about holding a pushup plank position?

That's what I do... break them up in 10 increments. Keep in mind, you are using your body weight to strengthen so the less you weigh, the easier they will get.

There are other ways to strengthen your shoulders, chest and back though. I do modified push ups and these, but laying down:

That's the starting point. Then keep your arms straight and bring the dumbells together in front of your face. I find these are less invasive for me (I have bad rotator cuffs). I do find that by working out and leaving at least 1 to 2 days rest in between (depending on soreness), each workout seems easier than if I wait a week in between.

Thanks greenfreak - will try!

I can do a plank for like 40 seconds. I try to do 3 times a week.

You could also do push ups on a surface-- a desk, a chair, a step... Just a different way of modifying it.
Once it becomes easier, you can do one (or more) "real" push up(s), then continue with modified for the number of reps/sets you want to do.

Never thought of that. I will try!

I also know once I lose more it will be easier, too. That makes sense.
