Are real Christmas trees harmful to dogs?

This is our first Christmas with our dog, Olive. We get a real tree every year, but I'm nervous that she might try to eat the needles. Of course we will do our best not to let that happen, but our tree goes in our LR where we spend most of our time. Are real trees harmful to dogs?

Our dogs always drank the water and it never harmed them. They never tried to eat the needles though.

No, i mean im sure its not good for them but i dont think it will be too harmful...

ive heard that Poinsettia's are though... i dont know for sure tho...

I heard poinsettas are too so we won't be getting them any longer. I just wanted to double check with the tree. She is never alone in the room where the tree will be but she is awfully curious so I just wanted to be sure. THANKS!

I don't think trees themselves are dangerous, but if you put more than water in the tree (such as mixing the water with a nutrient base), that can be dangerous.

The other thing is that trees seem to be inherent for dogs wanting to mark their territory, so you have to worry about that.

Another thing to watch - don't put ornaments on low lying branches where the dog can reach them to chew/break/tear off, etc.
