I think it's important to note that not everyone who is named James would also be called Jim. Some people may use it as a nickname but others may not. HTH

Absolutely agree. Don't assume a James is a Jim (although it is a nickname). I LOATHE when people call me Pat, assuming it's okay to shorten my full name

Agreed with this!
We have a LOT of James in my family. Two or three go by Jim. NONEr go by Jimmy - never Jimmy. They will correct you immediately for calling them Jimmy. My cousin's son, however, goes by James -- NOT Jim.
I don't assume ANYONE has a nickname unless that they tell me to call them that. I offhand know at least one Patrick, Timothy, Christopher, David, and Michael who do NOT want to be called Pat, Tim, Chris, Dave, or Mike... So I play it safe unless someone tells me they go by a nickname.

My brother's name is James. We use any combination of the following: James, Jim, Jimmy, Jimbo (he hates this) or Bo.

How funny, my SIL is the EXACT opposite!
Her name is Elizabeth.
We call her Liz, Lizzy or Elizabeth.
But she HATES Beth!
Of course my BIL (her little brother) purposefully calls her that to bust her chops!

DH's name is James, his friends and family call him Jimmy, as do I. People at work call him Jim. No one calls him James really though he will answer to it.

No they are not interchangable -
If someone introduces themselves to you as James, they want to be called James - you don't take it upon yourself to call them Jim or Jimmy .......(Not "You" as in the OP, I'm just speaking in general)
I hate when people do this .........
My Dad does the opposite, if you intoduce yourself as Liz, he'll call you Elizabeth .........IMO it's rude.

My name is Leslie and people call me Les. I don't like it.
So if someone says their name is James, call them James. If they say their name is Jim, call them Jim. If not, ask them their preference.

Also, not all Jims are James. My DH is Jaime (hi-may) but goes by Jimmy casually. Sooooooo many people call him James.

a woman I work with decided Beth is not a nice name and Elizabeth is better

I agree completey. My name is Kim, not Kimberly... people always assume it's Kimberly (and I totally understand that) but I've never ever called myself or introduced myself as Kimberly, yet you wouldn't believe the number of people who just go ahead and call me Kimberly (lucky for them it really doesn't bother me, but I could only imagine how it would annoy someone else). I would NEVER assume or call someone something other than what they introduced themselves as.

my parents named me Elizabeth to call me Beth
and I really only tell people my name is really Elizabeth if I am going to be filling out a legal document or buying something like a car etc.
they also named my brother Anthony- to call him Tony
and my sister Katherine- and we call her Katie

I completely agree with the nickname thing - my brother James will respond to any of the names listed James, Jim, Jimmy.
My name Christina also has abbreviations like Chris, Tina, Chrissy. Now, my family and close friends call me Chris and it doesn't bother me, but I never introduce myself this way to anyone EVER, so why do people take it upon themselves to give me the nickname. One woman at work called me Chrissy for the whole school year. I have only had one person ever call me Chrissy, my grandpa, and lady you are not my grandpa so stop using his nickname for me!

I have the same issue with the names. My name is Jennifer, but I usually go by Jenn. However, in business situations, or when I'm on the phone with someone I don't know, I'll usually say my name is Jennifer. And all the time, the person responds by saying, "Hey Jenn, nice to meet you."
I don't MIND Jenn, but if I say Jennifer, call me Jennifer.

I cringe when people call my DD Liz. I named her Elizabeth because I love the name but I don't like all of the nicknames for it.

My BIL is James - we call him Jamie.
DD is Elizabeth - we usually call her Elizabeth but when we use a nickname we call her Ella bc I don't like Beth or Liz. When she's older and if she wants to be called Beth or Liz so be it. People at daycare call her Liz or Lizzie all the time whic drives me crazy.
My name is Christine. Only my parents and one of my friends call me Chris every once in awhile. I hate being called Kristen or Christina - happens all the time!

To me, that's even worse, when its not a real nickname. My name is Heather, and people at work call me Heth.  In Jr High, when people would call me that I would growl 'errrrrrrrrrr' at them!
