When I check kiddie Academy in islip a few weeks beack she said that for school aged kids, parents who have no on to watch their kids can call up and bring their kid there and they just pay for that one day. Maybe they can do the same for you????
I don't know if other daycares do anything similar.

Some in-home daycares do something called Drop-in care...If you contact the Child Care Council of Suffolk (or Nassau), they will be able to assist you

I know that Bright Horizons in Woodbury does something like that. Some corporations contract with BH and offer "immediate care" to their working Moms as a benefit. Something like 10 days a year that their Moms can use at any time.
I'm not sure if they do it on a day to day basis for anyone off the street, but its worth a call.

Honestly Jen in this economy a lot of schools are losing kids as parents lose their jobs and have become more flexible. Also if there is a center which serves a lot of teachers they are slow over the summer. It can't hurt to take some time and call a few even if you tried in the past. I know because this is what is happening at my center. They've added 1/2 days and "non member" drop off prices to their pricing schedules this week.
eta: they need to be in ratio and sometimes they may have to say no to drop offs, so it may be helpful to have more than one back up center.
