Are there non allergic cats similar to non allergic dogs?
I'm not even sure that makes sense but DH wants a cat and I'm allergic to them. Not horribly but enough to make life unpleasant. Are there any cats that are safe?

I don't think so ....... You would have to spend some time around the cat to know whether or not it was going to be a problem -

And just so you know- I was allergic to cats too before I got mine. After being around your cat for a while, your body will build up a tolerance to that particular cat's dander...and you wont' have a problem anymore.
I just took allergy pills for the first 2 weeks or so- and after that I was 100% fine..

my sister has a cat allergy--and she has a cat! she just has to take allergy shots every few weeks---and her need for them has been waning significantly.
if that doesn't work you could always consider getting a hairless cat

It is actually not the hair on the cat that causes the allergy - it is the saliva. They lick themselves and get saliva all over their hair so that's what causes the issue.
They tested me, and I've had the doctor and 3 techs tell me I'm VERY allergic to cats. I'm currently getting shots for it (along with some other allergies.)

that is not true for everyone. some people get worse with each and every exposure and it can actually become unsafe.
there is no cat that is allergy proof but some are more prone to cause allergies than others.

This happened to dh, he was severly allergic to cats and adjusted so quickly once we moved in together. My cat at the time made anyone with crazy allergies act up for some reason and it was quite a surprise he adjusted. Thank Goodness because if I had to choose dh or one of my kitties I know who would win hands down

Re: Are there non allergic cats similar to non allergic dogs?
I don't know about any allergy-free cats, but I used to be HIGHLY allergic to them.
When I started dating my DH, he had one cat, a female. I started getting allergy shots once a week, then over time it went to once every 2 weeks.
Eventually I built up a good enough tolerance to where I could be around her, but if I petted her, I had to wash my hands immediately (still do). And if she licks me, I get a little red rash.
Two and a half years ago we adopted a boy kitten. I have no allergic reaction to him at all. I cuddle with him, snuggle him, and give him kisses all the time, with not a single sniffle, cough, sneeze or rash.
I don't know if it's because we had him since he was a baby, and I got used to him, or if it's because he's a boy and his pheromones are different.
I know everyone reacts differently, but maybe this could be the case for you too.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm not so sure I want to take shots right now.
