Are there prescription strengh heartburn meds safe for pregnancy?
Just curious if anyone knows.
I am only 17 weeks and heartburn has been here from day 1. I could drink a cup of water and feel it burning my esphogus. It's awful. The OTC meds aren't helping that much, even though they worked wonders with DS.
Anyone else suffer badly? Were you able to get a prescription that was safe??

Re: Are there prescription strengh heartburn meds safe for pregnancy?
I've had GERD since 2001 and have been treating it with Nexium ever since. My Dr. knows I take it and she knows I was TTC (first prenatal appt is on March 2). Not once did she mention it wouldn't be safe to take.

Re: Are there prescription strengh heartburn meds safe for pregnancy?
I took Nexium for both of my pregnancies on a daily basis. I would have died if I didn't. There were many days that I took a lot of Tums also.
I used to sell both Prilosec and Nexium when I was in Pharmaceutical Sales, and they are both perfectly safe.
Both of my kids turned out just fine (except for their horns and tails)..JK

Ya see this is where it gets interesting. My doc told me specifically NO to Nexxium (as i had been taking it prior)...Tums, Zantac and i haven't crossed that 'what's next' bridge yet...

Re: Are there prescription strengh heartburn meds safe for pregnancy?
I am in the same place at 17 weeks and have tried tums, tums 1000 and mylanta. No help. My dr. said I could take pepcid AC and that has helped some, but not 100%. I would love to take tums in between the pepcid, because pepcid is only taken 2x a day, but the pepcid says not to take it while taking other antacids, so I am too chicken to go that route.
Have you tried Pepcid AC? I do know some people who have had to ask their Dr. for a prescription.
