are these sensory issues?

hi mamas, 4.5 ds has always had a crazy fixation on balloons since he was very young. if he sees one, he absolutely has to hold it. as ds has gotten older, he seems to have developed other issues like constantly and randomly rubbing his nose, flapping his arms while running and an absolute need to constantly pick up and hold onto acorns, seeds and leaves whenever he sees any. in extracurricular classes, ds often ignores the instructor's direction and will do his own thing. although his preK teacher hasn't mentioned his lack of attention or ability to follow her direction. but when we attended ds's preK open house, ds didn't follow with his class during performances..... do these sound like sensory issues? ds used to get EI for fine motor and speech but isn't in anything now. my gut tells me that ds needs some help and support but not sure how or for what specifically.

Is he diagnosed with anything? It cant hurt to ask your district to evaluate him for OT and other issues. My son is diagnosed with ASD and he is very sensory seeking and he also has his like "quirks" too. For instance anytime he sees an elevator he becomes obsessed, has to push the buttons and loves to watch the doors open and close.

ETA if you want you can also make an appointment with a developmental pediatrician

thank you so much!! ds isn't diagnosed with anything but a PT friend said ds seems to be fixated on certain things much and many times he really just doesn't listen, is more fidgety than normal. how do i find a development pedi?

My 3 year old son has some similarities... Call Victoria Chen at LIJ in New Hyde Park. Excellent developmental pediatrician. Also, lots of fish oil...

Wanted to also recommend a book that might help you... Its called 'smart but scattered', it really was an eye opener for me.
