for me it depends. i have no problem with having small talk be it with strangers or with friends. i am one of those people who remembers to ask questions like -- how is your sick mom doing, how is your daugher enjoying school, how was your date on tuesday... etc...
i don't like small talk when i am trying to do something else and it is forced on me. this happens to me a lot on planes. people try to start convos even when you are watching tv, listening to music or reading.
i do sometimes get shy in crowds when i don't know anyone. i am okay if i know some people or a lot of people, but for some reason i hate events where i am solo and know no one.

i thnk I'm only ok at it if the person I'm talking to is ok at it. If they aren't then I am definately not.
