Worse...We lost a very cheap apartment w/ utilties included 2 and half years ago (the landlord's kids wanted to sell the house) The next cheapest apartment we could find was nearly double the rent costs ( and it's still considered "cheap" for Long Island unless you go for a basement or studio which is not even allowed with 2 kids) Even though my husband's pay has pretty much doubled since then at the same small business he has worked at for 8 years . The problem is so has our rent costs doubled with a forced move and we have very high ultilty bills and we are basicly not making it , we are always behind on bills and have shut off notices every month. All it takes is one emergency - like we had our baby's funeral/burial in January to pay for & our car needed expensive repairs 3 times since March and now we are in a rut for as long we can see . It kills my husband no matter how hard he works, no matter how many raises he's gotten, it's never enough in the Long Island rat race. We would do anything in the world to move out of Long Island (or NY) so we can live "normal" without a constant gun to our head and we have tried but there are no jobs or call backs in the states we looked into and living paycheck to paycheck there is really no savings enough to make a secure big move with a sense of stability. It's very depressing, we feel stuck here forever and it makes us terrified about the future.
Where does your dh work? I find that LI rentals are very expensive. Rents tend to be a little less in areas like astoria , kew gardens, or college point. Are you in a 2 bedroom? A small 2 bedroom in one of those areas in queens may be better for you until things get better

worse because my house value dropped and i had to pay $50k to get rid of the thing so we could get another house that would fit my twins. worse because i have an even more disgusting amount of taxes taken out of my salary each year, and i pay a boat load of taxes at the end of the year. to me, obama is stealing my children's college fund with all the taxing he is doing. i make a very decent living yet we are still living pay chack to paycheck. the middle class needs to be redefined.
