Are you for real????

OK, so over the Christmas holidays, I posted about DH aunt who pouted like a 5 year old because we told her we didn't want her holding DS... the day after she didn't come to our house Christmas Eve because she was sick... then proceeded to show up Christmas day at another function with a surgical mask on (apparently as a joke Chat Icon ) and announce how she was going to go wash her hands so she could hold him! Chat Icon

OK, so we haven't been together since. I smoothed things out over email since then and all is well.

We all get together for Easter and DS Baptism yesterday and at the reception I make nice and hand DS to her so she can hold him. What does she do? She proceeds to let my 6.5 month old son play with jelly beans! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I made DH go over and handle it because I couldn't believe it! So, what are the odds that she will ever be alone with DS in the future? Zip, zero, zilch... she will be watched like a hawk! Ugh!

You did the right thing by trying to make up for x-mas, now I dont blame you if you never let her hold your DS.

Re: Are you for real????

Just to clarify...was she letting him EAT jellybeans? Or just like swat his hands around in a thing of jellybeans...

I mean if she was really watching him and just having fun and let him move his hands in the jellybeans but took them out of his hands, I wouldn't really be irritated. BUT if she is the negligent type and doesn't pay attention, and he began to eat them I would be upset....

Just wanting to make sure!

You bring up a very fair point, thanks! Let's clarify. She was not letting him eat the jelly beans. There was a plate in front of him with a bunch of jelly beans on it and he was putting his little grubby hands all over them, trying to get them. But this is a 6 month old baby who puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. Jelly beans would definitely be a choking hazard for him. You know how fast babies can be.. she was sitting there having a conversation with other people. In the blink of an eye, she could have looked up and he could have picked one of them up and put it in his mouth. That's what scared me the most. I don't think she would do it on purpose, but then again this is someone who asked to hold the baby after she was sick....maybe I have an extra case of "protective momma bear" when it comes to her.. KWIM?

Re: Are you for real????

I'd be super-cautious with her, because it sounds as though, esp. in yesterday's example, she's not a 'super-cautious' type when it's needed.

OK... she should not be allowed to hold/watch DC for any seconds. She obviously has no clue or forgot what a baby is and the hazards for them.

Re: Are you for real????

I'm sorry, but I would seriously never let her hold my child again!

To play with jellybeans - regardless of whether or not she was letting him eat them is completely irresponsible of her.... We all know how fast children can be - all he needs is a millisecond to grab one, and shove it in his mouth!

Thanks for clarifying!

I don't think you are being extra protective, you are just being a careful mom.

The only reason I asked is b.c I could totally see some family members of mine letting johnny play with small things BUT making sure he only touched and grabbing anything he may bring to his mouth.

You are right about putting everything in their mouths at that age...heck DS still does and he is 18 months, lol.

She seems very aloof to these things, I would be mad too...and definitely no babysitting for her!!

Re: Are you for real????

I'm sure there are many more age appropriate things your child could have been playing with besides jelly beans. I'm sure you have a bazillion toys within easy access to him.

I would not let this woman hold him again. She sounds negligible. Next time it could be the ever so fun toothpicks, etc. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon No freakin' way!Chat Icon

Re: Are you for real????

I would have been FREAKING out. My DS is same age, and EVERTHING is in his mouth in 2 seconds. I wouldn't trust her. I'd let her hold him but watch like a HAWK!
