Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
Or do you take the book/movie at face value as a work of fiction?

I am going to see it but not because I think it is 'only' fiction, but because I think it could present an incredibly valid question of the history of Jesus and of early Christianity and of the Hebrew faith of the time of Jesus.

Re: Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
I look at it as fiction, and am excited to see the movie.
I was at a friends house recently, and her uber-religious mom dropped by. She saw the book and told her daughter to "Get the Devil's word out of her home". When my friend refused, the Mom screamed and left.

Not planning on boycotting. I take it as a work of fiction, but believe there is some truth that Jesus was married or at least "companions" with Mary Magdalene.
People were "married" in their early teens back then. I think it's unrealistic to think any male (no matter what their persuasion) wasn't coupled with a woman during that time period.

I take it at face value as a really good fiction book. I like how Dan Brown put a new spin on an age-old story. I like books that make you think

Not boycotting it, but I might one of very few who did not really enjoy the book, and have no interest in seeing the movie.

Re: Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
I don't know if I will see it, because I haven't read the book and would rather read it before seeing the movie.
From what I know of the book, it strikes me as historical fiction, like a fictional story based on historical events. I wouldn't boycott it.

Essentially, without having it spoil it, the theme is that the Holy Grail does not necessarily refer to the cup of Christ, but rather to the womb of the Royal bloodline of Christ. The speculation is that it was Mary Magdalene (sp?).

Re: Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
I CANNOT wait to see it. Its fiction to me , and I think the boycott is silly , just choose to look the other way if you dislike something is better in my opinion. Relgion is too heated a subject and something a boycott cannot change. I guess people who truly believe one way will have a jaded pointo f view and not be able to see the "fiction" in it...but thats just sad.

And furthermore, that it's not a male sitting next to Christ in the Last Supper, but really Mary Magdalene - the one w/the long red-hair.

Right, that is the theory that DaVinci painted Mary Magdalene next to Jesus and not St. John

Re: Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
My mom wants to boycott it. She gets mad if we even mention seeing ti or reading it.
I want to read the book because I'm really interested in early christianity and judaism.
Any realistic depiction of the last supper would have had women and children, who are essential aprts of a passover seder. Who would cook the food? Who would ask the 4 questions?
There is a lot of historical evidence that Jesus did have brothers, but it is not conclusive...no evidence from 2000 years ago could really be conclusive anyway. I don't know about Jesus being married or having a companion, etc. It's possible, because of his age and because it was of course a normal thing to do, but he also knew he would be sacrificed, and had other purposes, so it's possible he didn't. I think saying it was Mary magdalene is just a fun and controversial story to tell because she was a prostitute, so it adds intrigue. I don't know what the historical evidence on this is

Re: Are you planning on boycotting the Davinci Code for religious reasons?
The reality is that all religion is based on speculation.....Can we really prove that Mathew, Mark, Luke, & John wrote the gospels? Can we prove that the Old Testament is merely myths and tales in order to explain how the world came to be?
I am a devout spiritual Catholic and have studied many types of religions. I don't support everything doctrine the Vatican throws upon is. I beleieve that we are a changing world and to boycott the movie, would just feed into the Uberreligios extremists!
I will see the movie because I love Tom Hanks!
