Area Rug Question for Open Floor Plan

Our house has a very open floor plan. Do I need matching area rugs?

I need one for the great room which is really only divided off by the couches and the dining room which is wide open.

Re: Area Rug Question for Open Floor Plan

I was just about to post a similar question. I have an open floor plan as well and will need 2 area rugs - one for my living room which is a casual feel and one for the dining room area which is more formal. I am thinking of getting ones that compliment each other. Does that work?

Re: Area Rug Question for Open Floor Plan

Maybe someone could post ideas for us.

I am looking for earth tone colored rugs. I don't really have a set style as we just did the wood floors and are redecorating so I'm open to all idea.

Help.

Re: Area Rug Question for Open Floor Plan

When it comes to rugs, the one thing i'd do is keep the rug styles similar. In an open floorplan I wouldn't do a very detailed oriental rug with an extremely modern rug.

similar rug styles (maybe too similar?)

I'd go with a pattern and a solid in complementing colors, like this:

Wow, we are both in the same boat. I am about to do wood floors and will be buying rugs and curtains to put in this area. I am also looking for earth tones as my living room is green and the dining room area is brown.

Re: Area Rug Question for Open Floor Plan

My SIL has 2 rugs and they are the same colors but slightly different prints. One is sage and ivory but the sage is heavy around the edges and in the middle. The other is more mixed throughout. Very pretty, they are same manufacturer so it helps with the coordinating.

No, I like it better when its different, then it won't be so much of the same carpet.

I want different. I just want them to compliment each other. Any ideas?
