Paint ques for open floor plan...update with awful picture

I'd like to do a two-tone in my dining room - tan on top, blue on bottom (separated by a chair rail) and a sage in my living room.

Will that look silly?

If it won't - where should I stop the one paint and start the other?

Or do I have to do the same paint tones throughout the first floor?

ETA - the black splotchies are doors. Front door, sliders going to the backyard, and a pantry door/entrance to garage.

well how open is open? Is there any definition between the rooms? Columns, small walls separating the rooms? Do you have pics? I have a very open floor plan in my Hi-Ranch with no separation in between LR,DR & Kitchen, so we painted everyone the same color.

I literally just did this last week! I have a fairly open floor plan. I am planning on taking some pictures tonight even though my house is still in disarray from having to empty bookcases and such for the painters. I'll try to post them later if I get a chance.

I used the same colors you mentioned in my dining room. BM Stratton Blue on the bottom, and BM Lenox Tan on the top.

Here's a link to my original post with pictures (the before pictures). My dining room is between my family room and living room, both entrances are pretty open. I kept my family room the same color (BM Marblehead Gold) and we didn't paint the living room which is very pale yellow and white.

Thanks ladies!

There really is no separation - only the stairs, front door, and a closet...

I've updated my original post with a terrible drawing I did in Paint.

We have a split level - open style living plan and what we ended up doing was a merlot wall on the biggest wall -- when you walk in and then a beige (BM guest house). Down below in the entry we did a lighter beige but I wish we did the darker BM color (someday I'll make DH redo it. LOL).

Take a look at my pics in my album

If you don't have any separation at all, then maybe you could do an accent wall.

Trish, Chmenger(sp) did something awesome...I'm sure she'll post pics when she sees this.
I really love accent walls too.

Thanks for all the help everyone - I'll probably end up doing an accent wall of some kind...

Do the chair rail in the dining area with the tan on top, blue on bottom. I'll have the tan throughout kitchen, den and LR and then on the right side wall of the LR - do a sage accent wall... Thank you!!

Special thanks for not laughing at my "drawing"!! Chat Icon

ETA: And I love the colors you are doing. I used those colors in my bathroom. They go great together. Can't wait to see what it looks like when you are done.

I was going to suggest this exactly. Let us know how it turns out.
