ASD diagnosis and CSE

Long story short, after 8 years of searching and tens of thousands of dollars spent, we finally have a diagnosis for DD.

ASD (Aspergers)
Along with ADHD and Anxiety- which we already knew.

i formally requested CSE meeting and met with school Psych. She told me that ASD diagnosis doesn't guarantee any services and that Children are not given services to prevent them from failing, they only get services AFTER they fail...

She also said that the district doesn't need a child to be an A or B student, they just need them to pass.

Thoughts?

Who gave her the diagnosis? I am guessing you went privately? In theory, services should be given based on need, not diagnosis. In reality, a diagnosis often makes it easier to get services approved, but it sounds like you still might have a fight on your hands. What specifically are you trying to get for her? I think if you have been working with someone outside the district, ask them for a recommendation for services and tell the district that's what you want. If they don't want to provide them, I would hire an advocate to consult with.

Sorry this has been so difficult for you.

Is your child struggling? What kind of services are you looking for from the district?

My son never had a "diagnosis" until he was 8. He struggled from age 2 when he didn't talk, and currently struggles as a 16 year old in 11th grade. From age 2 to 8 he always received services based on his need, not a diagnosis. Of course he still receives services, nothing really changed after a diagnosis for him though.

You get services based on need not diagnosis, but that being said, you request and autism behavioral consultant and parent training because of the diagnosis. Accommodations to class and work will be based on needs.

It will definitely depend on what kind of services you are looking for and your SD.
