Aside from star: The EXTRA rebate this year
Okay so I committed a united states postal service crime: I open my old house owner's mail. Don't judge me , but they moved to some far away place and not all their mail got forwarded and I was just curious. ANYHOW, here's the story, they got the "besides the star extra rebate" but I moved into the house (closed) in August so am I entitled to it? and if I do how do I bring it up, or to who? Becuse I'm not going to say, hey I open the "old owners" mail and they got a rebate but it's not theirs and I want to know how I can claim it. Would I first have to file taxes before? Somebody make this clear for me!

Re: Aside from star: The EXTRA rebate this year
You are eligible to receive a rebate check if, as a homeowner, you receive a basic or enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption on your 2006-2007 school tax bill.
So it belongs to the previous owner, not you. I had the same thing happen to me - I opened the mail (I bought an estate sale so the woman passed away) and I opened it b/c we get a lot of questionable mail addressed to her - it's hard to decipher what is junk and what isn't. Anyway, I sent it to the Executor for her to deal with.

Enhanced Star is for senior citizens. Basic Star for everyone else. The previous homeowners paid the taxes on this home which this rebate came from and are entitled to receive this. It needs to be given to them.
