Asking about salary before interview???

I have been sending my resume out in case I have to go back to work. Someone just called and left a message on my answering machine. They would like to set up an appt. for Monday for an interview. I have no idea what the salary is. Is it rude to ask when I call back regarding the interview? Should I wait until I meet with them? I dont want to waste their time or mine if it is not where I want the salary to be.

I have done this many times by asking, "what is the salary range for this position." I am not going to waste my time or theirs by interviewing for a position that does not fit my needs. usually I won't even apply for a position that does not have a salary range listed though.

I agree with Melissa and have done the same thing. No one is ever offended and HR people have even told me that it is common courtesy to TELL you the salary so not to waste anyone's time...
