Asking for a friend - Anyone have to put their 3 month old under for an MRI?
She's trying to make a decision on whether or not to just do it now and get the results (& peace of mind) or wait until 6 months, when he's a little older.
WWYD?
I said, for peace of mind I would need to know the results now and either take care of whatever it is that needs to get done b/c god forbid it IS something, it should be addressed asap but then there is a lfip side of having to put him under at such a young age.
I told her I'd come on and ask if anyone had to put under there 3 month old?

I haven't been in that situation, but I'd say that I'd have to weigh out the risks... if it can show something serious that would need treatment asap, I'd probably just do the MRI at 3 months. If it's just for my own peace of mind and nothing that could potentially get worse in the 3 months to wait, then I'd do it at 6 months.
to your friend and baby!

Depends on if it would change the outcome/treatment.
If a treatment plan depended on the results, I would do it ASAP.
If it was just for peace of mind but wouldn't change the outcome or a treatment, I would try to hold off a couple more months. I would probably go crazy in that time, thinking of worse case scenarios, etc but I would try to hold off.

DS has had three MRI's - first one he was put under at LIJ and the last two we went to NRAD in Lake Success because as long as my DH was comfortable going into machine with DS, they were fine with it and it worked out and didn't have to put DS under anesthesia.

Re: Asking for a friend - Anyone have to put their 3 month old under for an MRI?
We had to do it at 6 months. i debated alot over it. In the end your friend has to measure the possible benefits versus risks. For us, we had to do it since my DD kept on having apneac(sp?) episodes and they couldn't do the tests they needed to with her awake. However, we also didn't become aware of the problem until she was 6 months old. Within a month of the initial diagnosis that something might be wrong we had various tests done and she had to be put under for the last one. honestly, it felt like forever, but it really wasn't that long. We decided to do it since if they found something she would have to have the surgery which was very necessary.
I would definitly tell you friend to talk to the ped, talk to the specialist, talk to the place that would do it and to find out exactly what they hope in finding out with the MRI, since some of the tests they put my DD through didn't actually rule anything out and to find the definite answer and what they had to do, she had to be put to sleep for a little bit.

Hunter had a cat scan at 4mo. At first we were told that he would have to be put to sleep---then the dr told us to starve and sleep deprive him all morning (yikes, I know that sounds terrible) and to give him a bottle as soon as we got there. We did and he fell asleep on his own so they didn't have to knock him out. They were able to get all of the images that they needed. Maybe they can do something similar for the MRI?

This is what i was going to say. We didn't have to sedate DS until he was older and more aware.
Wishing them all the best and sending lots of &

Peyton had a few CT scan when she was 8 weeks-16 weeks. She was awake for all of them. They said they were going to have to put her under but, I asked I could try to nurse her to sleep and see how it went. It worked out fine every time.

Re: Asking for a friend - Anyone have to put their 3 month old under for an MRI?
My DD was put under at 2 months and again at 3 months for a laser treatment on a hemangioma. The treatment took 5 minutes so they just gave her gas no IV. I did a lot of research and decided it was the right decision for my DD. If she does decide to do it I was told to just make sure the anthesiologist does only pediatric patients and will be the one administering the IV. They often have residents or interns do the IV and the doctor on call is floating in case of emergency. She should insist the doctor is the one to do it.
Good luck!
