Re: Assistant Dilema
wow, what does she think this is? I know she is young, but seriously, she needs to suck it up and haul her azz into work. hungover or not and it kills me that she said to you, that you seem like the type to call in after a hard night of drinikin. she clearly thinks you 2 are bff, maybe that is why she was kind of blowing you off.
i don't think a warning would help her.

Re: Assistant Dilema
very inappropriate - filthy mouth alone is a ground for firing her.
How dare she?

Re: Assistant Dilema
Thank you everyone! She just called me from a cab HYSTERICAL crying. Her dad told her it was ridiculous for her to come in and to go home. It's fine with me, I didn't want to see her today anyway.. I will sit with her on Monday, discuss everything with her. If I don't like the way she is taking what I say, I will make my decision then. She apologized for being unprofessional and said she'd work on it. Let's see if it happens...
Thanks again for all the advise!!

I think she meant I seem the type to understand if she called me after a night of drinking...
But regardless, you're right... she's ridiculous...

Re: Assistant Dilema
Eygh. I changed my mind aftr reading the full IM. She's got PROBLEMS.
There are so many glaring inconsistencies in her story and she just seems WAY WAY off to me. Using a nieghbor's computer, but she cant use their phone?
She's gotta go to a doctor, but no, she's ok to come in?
I don't get it at all.

Re: Assistant Dilema
My guess her scallop/clam issue was compounded by vodka, bourbon or beer.
But that's not the issue. She acts unprofessional at work and towards you! Not to mention her wardrobe

So true! Once or twice when I was her age and I had had a big night, I called my boss's work phone and left her a voice mail at about 6:30-7am - It's a bit more professional and then I didn't actually have to talk to her!!

She is an at will employee which means she can be terminated without notice and for almost any reason.
Cite her unprofessional behavior, fire her, then get yourself a new assistant.
lol, why that made me laugh I don't know.. but question, what's an "at will employee"? Isn't it illegal to fire someone without warning?
Nope, if you are an at will employee you can be let go w/o notice and for almost any reason. Her unprofessional behavior is grounds enough. If she signed a contract for employment that states otherwise, that's a different story.
She def. signed an agreement letter. I'll have to talk to HR about it I guess.. Let's see if she shows up today...
HR can help you formally document the stunt she pulled today and help you get on the road to getting a more responsible assistant. Let them know what's going on, so when she does it again, HR can't say we can't count that other time. good luck!

Re: Assistant Dilema
as her boss it is your responsiblity to lay the ground rules for what you expect from her professionally.
i would hold a meeting and explain that though it is a relaxed office - a text message is not calling in sick. wearing mini skirts - not appropriate. cursing like a truck driver - uncool. honestly - she may just not know - and unless you tell her she never will. and than she will be a dope in all her future jobs - i honestly think a talk will be helping her.

Re: Assistant Dilema
I would use this example as a perfect opportunity to call her in. Tell her that you work in a professional office and you expect her to be professional. Inform her that her "dress attire" is not appropriate with the company's dress code (see if your company even has a dress code). Tell her that as YOUR assistant, she's also representing you and her attitude / behavior reflects on you and it's unacceptable.
I'm an assistant and would 100% expect my boss to tell me if I was screwing up! AND if she thinks you're her friend, it might be easier to handle with her.

Crap- I didn't even see that! That is incredibly insulting, and I whatever sympathy I had for her is definitely gone now. What is she trying to say- that you are an irresponsible party girl? WONDERFUL thing to imply to your boss.
