Assisted Living facilities in Western Suffolk?

It's finally time to start researching these for my grandmother. She's 87 and just stopped working this week. She's frail, but no major health issues. Mostly old-age lack of energy, depression, etc. She just doesn't have the energy to cook, clean, and run her life like she used to. She's in Queens now, but it would be great for her to be out here. I'm her only family, so all the research, planning, etc is on my shoulders. I'm planning on making some calls this week and setting up tours.

Until we get her into a place, I'm going to interview caretakers to go to her once a week and take her for groceries, salon, errands. It takes me an hour to get there and I can't go in every single week. She can still do a lot, but it takes her forever and she just doesn't want to anymore.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could offer any insight if you have any. Whether it's questions I should ask, places I should stay away from, or positive experiences with any assisted living facilities. It's all so overwhelming.

Gurwin (Fay J. Linder) Assisted Living in Commack. It's pricey but well worth it. I used to work there and everyone always thought they were in a hotel. FM with any questions

My grandmother was in Gurwin as well for several years before she passed away almost a year ago. I think its one of the top assisted living places on LI.

I know my IL are looking at a few places as well for DH's 93 YO grandmother. She's supposed to come up from FL in a few months to see if she wants to move. They're trying to figure out places as well. She keeps falling and is all alone down there though she's really stubborn and doesn't want to leave. They have one place in mind but I'll have to ask DH, I'm blanking on the name but its in the Huntington area. I know its one of the 'chains'

Gurwin does have an excellent reputation. Although I don't know anything about them, just from living in the Huntington area, I can tell you that there is an assisted living facility on the service road to the LIE, just east of Rt. 110. I also know there is a Sunrise facility located on Deer Park Avenue, just south of exit 42 on the Northern State Pkwy.

There's the Bristal in Massapequa (on Amityville border) near Sunrise Mall and Sunrise of West Babylon on Montauk Highway.

Re: Assisted Living facilities in Western Suffolk?

Sunrise and Gurwin are definitely too expensive, although they have excellent reps. We liked Somerset Gardens in Plainview - right off the LIE. We also liked the Arbors in Hauppauge. Both are in our price range and seem amazing as far as the vibe, the staff, the amenities, etc.

These people are like vultures, though. I'm so glad I didn't give them my cel phone #, b/c I get about 5 messages a day on my home machine from them while I'm at work. One thing I learned this week is that you could definitely bargain with them. I'm going to do my homework before the bartering begins!
