My son is in special class
he is in kindergarden, they have 1 teacher
i teaching aid and 1 teaching assistent

So only the teacher and the TA can give discrete trials and not the aid

In his prior school both of them were teaching aids and so were able to provide discrete trials

Anythoughts ?

Son moved from CPSE to CSE. in CPSE he went to a great school , it was funded by the county. Now in CSE ,district is keeping in house and i am noticing lots of strange things

The 8:1:1 or 8:1:2 is just that amount of students in the class and teacher assistants that are provided.

Yes a TA and a teacher are the only ones that are suppose to provide discrete trials. An aide is just there for support or redirection. In our school all 8:1 classes are staffed with a TA for each child, a classroom TA and a teacher. This way discrete trials are done all day long. If you think you need additional supports in your class, request your son get his own TA.

8:1:2 means a maximum of 8 students, one teacher and 2 aides or assistants.

I would ask the teacher how the class is structured. They may not have all students doing discrete trials all day, they may schedule it so discrete trials occur when some of the students have pull outs for speech or other services or when the aide may be doing something else with them. It may also be that not every kid needs or gets discrete trials. I would just be concerned that my kid is getting what he needs.

Where I work on paper you may be an assistant or aid but all get paid as teachers aid. Everyone has a teacher assistant certification or full teaching certification so everyone is able to run trails. The teacher the one who checks to make sure everything running smoothly.

Yes , in the class as far as i know only 2 children need more support and one of them is mine ... i just dont see how in 4 and half hours of instruction how he gets enough to make progress .. i have asked to reconvene the IEP meeting

8:1:2 is a pretty standard ratio. Also, in an 8, I will say all of the kids need support. If they didn't need support, they would be in a class with a larger # of kids and possibly only one aide.

If you think your son is not getting enough support, I would ask for a 1:1 for him.
