At My DD's 9 MOS Pedetrician Visit, I Was Told It's Time For Her First Eye Exam...Is This Normal? *EDITED* - Scroll for MORE INFO
I had no idea so early! We made the appointment and was told that its a 2 hour appointment After reading more on the computer I saw that it's actually normal at 6 MOS to start going!
They said don't give her a bottle right before and bring sunglasses or a sun hat to put on her when we leave since her eyes will be sensitive.
What else should I expect?
Thanks

My ped did an eye exam in their office at his 9 month visit
I had to sit with him in my lap and put him in this tunnel made of fabric. Then they played images on a screen and watched how he watched them, etc. It only took about 5 minutes

Your dr. must be very thorough. My ped never said anything. We asked our eye dr. & he said generally there's no need until 3 years old, unless we think there is a problem.

My ped tried at 10 months but DD wasn't cooperating since it was her nap time. They said they would try again but never did.
It was similar to a PP who said that they wanted her to watch a TV screen.

Yes, DD had an eye exam at 9 months. It’s standard for her ped’s office. It’s a cool computerized one…they put electrode pads (similar to those use in EKGs) on her temple, and on her head…I held her on her lap and she had to stare at a TV screen in front of us while pictures flashed. It was really cool. We didn’t have to do anything to prepare for it, and she was perfectly fine afterwards…no eye sensitivity or anything. It was right after her 9-month well-visit, we went down the hall to the eye room. Lasted maybe 10 minutes. Said her vision was perfect. And she just had another one at her 2-year well visit…same exact test.

Rhys has the same test but at his 6 month visit.

Well my insurance didn't cover it in office so we have to go outside to a pediatric opthamologist. I am so confused now based on your responses! Why was I told to expect to be there for 2 hours???
Anyone else have it like this?

This is news to me bc "I" noticed dd had an eye issue at around 18 months and they NEVER tried to do one on her prior. Maybe if they had done one they would have detected something.

The ped told me it wasn't necessary until DS is 3 or 4. DH and I didn't wear glasses as children.

The pedi did the test for both my DC at their 6 month checkup. They just watched some screen and had sensors put on them that generated a report as their eyes moved to the things they were watching on the screen.
Neither of my DC were born with eye problems nor do we have any family history of problems. I was told it was routine.

I am rather surprised that Abby hasn't had her vision checked yet. Her family's vision history is far from stellar.
Every single person on both sides of my family as well as DH's family either wears/has worn glasses or contacts or has had lasik except for me. I am 20/20.

Kaydyn had an eye exam because she was having eye surgery and the reason they told us two hours was we filled out paperwork...got taken into a room and they did some tests (tv, pic on wall...toys moving and making noise)...then they dilated her eyes and we had to go back out into the waiting room for 20-25 mins.
Then they brought her back in and checked her eyes again with some machines. It took us about an hour and a half total.

I think the 2 hours is because they will dilate your DC's eyes. I can tell you all about it next week (we are going in on Monday!) However why no bottle the night before??

DS had the same thing - but he didn't cooperate. I think they tried at 8 months and they said they would try at the next visit. They never mentioned it again.

We had the option at DD"s 2 year check up to do it. Insurance didn't cover it but we still did it. It took all of 5 minutes. She sat on my lap, looked into something, they held something up to her eyes and it generated a report.
