Didn't realize you meant in a restaurant. Usually, it's when they can sit on their own without being strapped in. DD hates them, so we just have her sit on the regular chair, and she kneels to eat. It really depends on the child.

DD was unhappy in highchairs, by 18 mths she was sitting in a booster if we went out to eat

Gotcha. You can try anytime. But I think most kids don't try until at least 18 months, maybe 2 years.
DS is 22 months and we get both a highchair and a booster seat, because he likes to move back and forth. But we just stopped using the highchair at home and are solely using a booster seat. So I think things may change now at a restaurant.

Re: At what age can a child sit in a booster seat at a restaurant?
We tried using out little FP Booster Seat with the tray when our DD was about 5 months old but really it was around 6 months old where she was able to really sit nicely in it. We take it with us every time we go out to eat or even if we're at someone's house so she can sit with us and enjoy. It has an adjustable strap that goes around the back of the chair and another one that goes underneath to secure it.
EDIT - I realize you probably meant the big kid booster seat. Nevermind me then......my DD is only 9 months old.

DS is 6 months, and he will sit in the highchair at a restaurant, for about 30 min. I always strap him in, and he just holds his lovey or binky.

We used solely a highchair until Marron turned 3. Occasionally she will throw a tantrum at the highchair now and we will end up with the booster. I prefer the highchair though -- I feel she is more secure and can't move around as much. When we tried the booster about 6 months ago, she tipped it a few times so if we can still get her into the highchair we do.

Whenever they're ready. We have tried it a few times with Lily, but since we can't strap her into it, she has too much freedom and is up and down the entire time. At home, we have a booster seat with straps that she sits at the table in and she loves it.
