At what age did you allow DC to...
get out of bed themselves?
DS will be 3 in June and is great about calling for us when he gets up and waits in bed until we get him.
But I'm starting to wonder if we should allow him to get out of bed himself and play with toys in the morning.
He is very good about not touching things he shouldn't. And I definitely feel like he can be trusted.
But I wonder if I am messing with a good thing.

It was sooo long ago with Jordan that I do not remember but I ca tell you that Peyton is 3 and we have a babygate on her door. She can get up and play in her room, but she can't get out. As soon as she gets out, she goes into the fridge pulling stuff out, wanting her breakfast and her milk etc. She will not just go and play until she is all "set up". Every kid is different though.

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
Maybe I should start with allowing him to play in his room. He has just a small handful of toys, but then at least he'd be contained to a safe room.
My fear is if I say its ok to play in the morning he will take it to the next level and play when he should be sleeping.

I am in the same exact position as you. Sometimes DD wakes up at 6am and I want to let her know its okay to play with her toys but stay in her room. But I feel like I am opening up a can of worms bc then I am letting her get out of bed herself. I don't know what to do!

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
DS is 3 and I'd be so happy if he would get out of bed himself and play. I'm divorced and ex-h makes him wait in bed. So, every morning when he's with me, regardless of time, MOMMMMMMMYYYYYYY".
I don't think he'd go downstairs by himself yet so I wouldn't have a problem if he played by himself. If he NEEDED me or was hungry/thristy, fine but he plays in his room when I'm making dinner so why not, right?

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
My DD is 4.5 years old and just started entertaining herself in the morning. Before now, she would come into my room and tell me she was awake & then wait in the living room for me to get up, put on the TV for her and get her some tea or milk. Now, she puts on the light and reads until someone else in the house gets up....<Enter the 2 year old>....which is usually within a few minutes.

Hmmm...maybe I will hold off a little longer. I'd hate to allow him to do it and regret it later.

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
We live in a colonial with a long staircase so I never want him going down the steps alone. We also have a baby gate on his door so he can get up and play in his room if he wants... he will usually just stay in his bed and play with his stuffed animals and read books that he has on his side table. When he is ready to come out he calls us. I like it this way, so i don't have to worry about the stairs.

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
DS is 3.5 and he has been getting out of bed by himself forever.
We have a baby gate at the top of the stairs, but he knows how to open it. At the bottom of our stairs there is a closed door with a child proof doorknob that he can't open, so he really can't get downstairs.
But he will just wake up, come into our room and either lay with us for a little longer or we will put a cartoon on for him. I can't imagine him not getting out of bed by himself!

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
DD is almost 4.5 and started getting out of bed by herself approx. 6 months ago. Sometimes she comes into our room and watches TV/cuddles with us. She will usually call from the top of the stairs "Hello? Anybody down there?" and then will go down is she gets an answer, but just lately she started going down alone. I'll come down 10-15 minutes later and I usually find her playing happily by herself. Occasionally she'll turn the TV on. One morning I had left Bravo on and found her watching "a girly show" (America's Next Top Model) she was mesmorized.

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
Um, he just did it on his own. LOL
He'll be 3 in July and just gets out and either comes into our room on the weekends, or sometimes if it's during the week, he'll yell out "ok, I'm up" Then he gets down on his own.
We have a ranch, so stairs aren't an issue.

Re: At what age did you allow DC to...
They always just get out and come get me in my room - one at a time (2.5 yr old twins) and the other shortly follows. Our rooms are right nextdoor and there is a gate at the hallway so they can't get far.
