At what age did you try CIO?

My son is 3 1/2 months. We started to sleep him in a sleep sac instead of swaddling. when swaddled lately, he would spend so much time trying to get out of it and I was afraid the blanket was becoming a hazzard. I feel like he is too young to let him cry, but am I going to spoil him??it is so hard to tell......

Re: At what age did you try CIO?

We just started CIO, which I hate.
She is a little over 5 months. I felt she was too young before now.

I started at 3 months. It was the best thing I ever did - it took a few days but Jack has been sleeping from 7pm to 6:30 am since.

We started "too young" at a month old. It worked for us, but I guess we were just a special case.

We started at 4 months and it worked beautifully, but every now and then I spoil Alex and have to re-impliment it. The first 2 days are the worst...

I wouldn't do it before the child is 1, when they actually understand what's going on. Anything before 6 months is just way too dramatic IMO. . If they don't fall asleep in 15 minutes and keep crying, I would stop and go in! At that age, you want to show that mommy and daddy are there when he/she needs them. It's just way too early, IMO.

We tried it once when he was about 10 months, with absolutely no success. We tried it again when he was 13 months and he fell asleep in 15 minutes. He now falls asleep on his own after maaaaybe 30 seconds of wimpering.

I'm honestly not trying to start anything, but how is doing it before 6 months dramatic? I know we did it a little too early with Christopher, but I've heard it's absolutely fine after 4 months and if it works, why not? Chat Icon

I think it depends on how long the CIO is allowed to go on. When it's 15-20 minutes, that I would hardly call it CIO at all, although technically it is. However, letting a 4 months old baby bawl for an hour or two is a pretty drastic measure. I would imagine it then becomes a very dramatic experience for all parties involved.

Re: At what age did you try CIO?

I started to implement it this week and Jacob is 19 weeks. Monday night he cried for 40 min.. (DH went in ever 15 or so min) Tuesday night he went down with no fight at all, and last night I had to do it again and he cried for 45 min. I went in once, and when he saw me he got more worked up, so i had to stop going in. I am alone nights, my DH works till 11. I'll admit it is no fun, and I dont think there is a "RIGHT" time or age. Every baby is different and every parent is different in their parenting approaches. Like everything else I think you need to do what is best for your family.

In my case, Jacob falls asleep at the bottle while i rock him and he is in a deep sleep. But sometimes when i put him down in the crib he wakes up and starts to cry. The more i go in to him , I notice the more he starts to laugh and think its playtime and the more he cries cause he knows i will be back. Last night was very hard, and I'll admit i cried right along with him, but eventually he fell asleep and stayed asleep till 3:30. (Fell asleep at 7) I fed him, and then noticed he was starting to be wide eyed and laugh and think it was playtime again. So i put him down, put his binkie in and walked out and closed his door. He fussed for a few min, but fell right asleep till 6:30.

So for me, it is something i need to do. I am alone every night till 11 and I cannot hold him all night which is of course what he wants. Call me selfish but after tending to his needs all day, I need some "Me" time at the end of the day. JMO!

Ah, okay. I agree with this. We never let it go for too long with Christopher and we'd check on him in 5-minute increments.
