has anyone been successsful with CIO after age one?
Bryan sleeps with us now which has been fine up until now but he is starting to toss and turn at night wehich is interfering with our sleep. I have tried CIO in the past but he screams bloody murder relentlessly fpr hours and he makes himself vomit. I have tried the rocking and transferring but he always wakes up he is such a light sleeper. I dont know if I should continue with the co sleeping and sacrafice my sleep so he sleeps or if I shoud try the cio again even though it feels like torture for me and him.

I haven't but my very good friend did Controlled Crying when her daughter was 1 and it was a HUGE success. I know she went through two weeks of hell, but it was worth it in the end!!

YES! We just got through it after transitioning to the toddler bed since he fell out of his crib and was scared to go back in. For the first few nights I stayed with him unti he fell asleep and then I decided to CIO since it worked for us when he was about 8 monhts old. The first night was 2.5 hours of crying, the second night about 1 hour, then 20 minutes, etc. After about 5 brutal nights with night wakings, etc....he got it! And now he sleeps in his big boy bed and knows the routine. He is 21 months.

Re: has anyone been successsful with CIO after age one?
Yes, we ferberized at 16 months! I went from mostly cosleeping and nursing all night to putting Lyla in her crib. It took several days, and worked for about 3 months, however each and every time we put her in her crib she'd cry (for 30 seconds) and never went down happily. She did sleep 10 consecutive hours for these 3 months. Then, we had guests stay over and that was it. We would have had to redo it but couldn't go through it again at that point and she was back in my bed again for a few months before I got pregnant and had to get her out again. Personally I think it's harder on the baby when they are younger and harder on the parents when they are older.
Can you lie down with him in his room and slip away as a way to transitioin w/o CIO? We went through so many transitions. First, I put the crib away, put the mattress on the floor and slept next to her. The next thing was to put her in the toddler bed and then I sat next to her. Now, since we live in a small 2BR, we stay for a couple of minutes after she gets in bed, and then I go sit on the couch where she can see me from her room! Bedtime is still a battle sometimes, not as peaceful as I'd like, but at least we all sleep well. She sometimes does cry out loud for a few minutes, but she's 3 so it's more of an act now. I just tell her I'm going to shut her door if she continues to cry and that always works.
