at what age do stair gates come off?

at what age do stair gates come off?
i'm thinking i'll leave ours on for #2, but if she wasn't in the picture i was wondering when do people normally take them down? can the kiddos get too old for them and attempt gymnastics? or do they just learn to open and close them by themselves?
my DD's will be 2 1/2 years apart.

my 3.5 yo is great at jumping over them to get upstairs.
We had them off before #2 was crawling (then they went back up) that was probably when #1 was around 2- 2.5

My kids seemed to master the stairs by 2 years old or so. We just removed our gate a month ago (DS is almost 28 months)

 My baby is 9 and I just took them 3 days ago. Honestly they came in handy when friends' babies were over and keeping the dog away when we had company over.

I took them down about a month ago and he is 2. I still have one in the hall way so he can't go past the bedrooms if he gets up in the middle of the night.
