At what age?
Do kids get the freedom to ride their bikes by themselves? I saw a 5 year old the other day riding his bike up the block from his house, while mom was inside. Is that normal? Is that too young??

I have myself firmly inserted in my children's arse until they are atleast 8 . Even then with all the psychos around I would be outside if they were to be riding on the road.

I don't know but, my son is 6 and NO WAY!! A few months ago I saw a child from his class who lives a few blocks away riding his bike alone in the street with no helmet. And not watching where he was going either. I would have hit him if I didn't know that it was an intersection that was notorious for people jumping the stop sign and was going very slow. There were so many things wrong with that scene for me. 10 maybe? I really don't know when I will feel comfortable since my kids aren't that age yet but 5 seems way too young.

OK good! I thought it seemed a little odd, but not having older kids I wasn't sure if that could possibly be the norm!

My older girls are 9 1/2. It's only been since this year that I will let them out on the block while Im in the house doing other things. Previously I was either outside or hanging out in the livingroom watching out the window.
The fact that I live at the end of a "cul-de-sac" aka Dead End...and that I know all my neighbors..would kind have made you think that I would have relaxed a little bit. But Im a touch neurotic when it comes to such things.
I have since allowed them to ride around the block, in a group never alone, to give them a bit more freedom...and to ride to their friends house that is close by. My biggest concern is that we live off a fairly busy road....and again...Im neurotic.
So 5, riding bike alone, with no parent visiable....nope...not here...

5 - nope, no way, absolutely not!
My DS is 5, we live on a very kid friendly block where all the neighbors know and look out for all the kids. I do not allow my DS is to be outside on his own let alone ride his bike or scooter with out one of us being outside. I will usually be on the porch or gardening while he plays with friends within a 3 house span. If he (usually a group of kids) wants to ride bikes around the block they stay on the sidewalk and an adult or two are with them.

NO way at five will my dc be doing that. NOt only are there psychos out there, but plenty of cars backing out of driveways.

Honestly with all the crazies in this world I don't know when I'll feel safe with DD riding, walking, etc alone anywhere. It sad.

DS is 5 1/2, and it's not going to happen for a LONG time... we see 5 yos all the time walking/biking/skating in the street, and there are some dangerous corners nearby....
