At what age/grade do you think it's OK ....
to stop inviting the whole class (or just the boys) and start inviting by who my son actually WANTS to be at his party, who he's friendly with etc.
I'm not asking what I CAN do - I know, if I put the invitations in the mail I can technically do whatever I want -
But when do you think it's OK/expected to start doing this?

Being that I have never invited a whole class to a birthday party, I say whenever you want. There is no right age/grade, IMO.
We have always just invited whoever my son has wanted.

I have never invited the whole class, and no one really batted an eye. My daughter has also never been invited as part of a whole class invite, and it didn't phase me in the least.

I'm guessing 2nd grade because come to think of it, she's gotten not a single invite to ANYONE's party. Hrm...

Re: At what age/grade do you think it's OK ....
For DS#1, we stopped inviting whole class in kindergarten. We only invited kids DS played with and also old preschool friends and family friends.
For DS#2, we did not invite his whole pre-k class for his 5th birthday party next week. We only invited 5 of his friends he plays with often plus 2 other kids from his preschool that we are family friends with. We invited 10 families total only and it will be a home party.

L is in kindergarten and I'm the only idiot that invited the whole class. Her party was fun but it was mayhem. Every other parent invited a few kids that their child actually liked.

DD is having her first "friends' party this year - at 6 years old. We aren't inviting the whole class, just the girls and just the ones she is close with
I think it's fine at ANY age to be honest.

I a doing just the girls. It seems to be the norm.

Re: At what age/grade do you think it's OK ....
I think as long as you are not just leaving out 1 or 2 kids you can whenever you want. I see nothing wrong with inviting 5 out of the 10 boys in the class, but if you invite 9 out of 10 that can be hurtful to the one kid left out.
PS: I think LIF needs a children's birthday party forum lol, I think people have more questions regarding them then Disney!

DD is turning 5 this summer and we're just inviting the girls. Last year, we invited her whole preschool class.

Please just make sure to invite 18 kids if there are 20. This has happened to my girlfriend's daughter and it was heartbreaking. She was so upset.

I'm surprised by the replies! DS is in first grade and in our neighborhood, everyone still invites the whole class to parties. I was thinking next year that would change.

There are very few whole class parties in 1st grade. We have 26 kids in the class now. You probably have some preschool friends plus neighbors plus family friends. Most party venues can't accommodate that many people, especially if you also have some siblings.
I was trying to be inclusive this year and am having DS's party at a laser tag place. Still have a max headcount problem and we only invited 1/3 of the class plus some other friends and neighbors.
Even at places like bowling and Chuck E Cheese, I don't think the whole class is invited anymore. Just too many people.

Just saying that in my neighborhood, yes, everyone invites everyone.

Re: At what age/grade do you think it's OK ....
Honestly, whenever you want. There are no hard and fast rules about how and who you should invite. As long as the invites are mailed home I say invite who you want and don't feel obligated to invite everyone.
ETA - In Kindergarten, everyone got invited. By 1st grade though, I noticed it switched to all girls at the party and even then, it was not EVERY girl in the class.

I could not ever invite 26 kids with my family and other friends. It would be like 45+ kids. It has only been an option to invite all when they were in pre with like 14 kids in the class.
