At what age would you let your child walk 1-2 blocks to a friend's house?
DS has 2 friends who live 1-2 blocks from us.
One friend is not even a full block but you have to cross a large st with fast traffic. Friend lives in a cul de sac behind ours but cars travel at about 40mph. I don't think I want him to cross this st for a few yrs! Maybe when he is like 10yo.
New friend is a new buddy in his kindergarten class. I was so pleased to find out that the new friend he speaks about often lives just 2 blocks away from us. DS would need to walk to the end of our cul de sac and walk down one quiet st.
Would you let your 5yo child walk these 2 blocks?
I don't think I would feel comfortable with this anytime soon. I don't know if I'm being overprotective or if I'm normal.
What is an appropriate age to walk 2 blocks alone?

Not at 5, I would never even think about it. TBH, I probably wouldn't let my kids do it alone until they were 12 or so. Starting around 9, I may walk them to the end of the cul de sac and then watch them until they get to the friends house. But before that, we are walking door to door together.

I very clearly remember walking to the park, shopping center and friend's houses at age 7. I also remember walking home from kindergarten by myself too. I think it was about 2 blocks. I remember being able to see the school from the end of my st.
Times have definitely changed.

I think a lot depends on the child. It doesn't sound like something I would allow my 5 yo to do but I would consider walking with her to the corner of the cul de sac and then allow her to walk the one block by herself if I could see her walking and knew the other mom was waiting.

I don't have kids that's age but I'd say no earlier than middle school age...

Not at 5 that's for sure. There are too many sick people in this world.
My first thought when I read this was age 12, and even then I would probably be watching.

Absolutely not. No way. Under no circumstances. My oldest is 5 almost 6. I don't know when, but no time soon. Maybe middle school age, but I don't know.

This. My little sister's best friend lived about 10 houses down the road and both moms would stand outside and watch the kids run between the houses.

Ditto to all....I will probably be the house everyone comes to rather than sending my kids to others houses....I will be absolutely fine with the sleepovers and the mess etc as long as I can keep an eye on what's going on at all times

Based on my own life, by middle school def. Maybe slightly sooner. I was traveling to school solo for middle school.

I was just thinking our house will be the house everyone comes to. My other problem is younger 3yo DS. He would be a crying mess if I walked 5yo DS over and didn't let 3yo DS play too. that is a whole other issue though.
The new friend is the youngest of 3. Parents seem to become more lax with the youngest. On our st, there are a 6yo and 7yo (both the youngest of 3) and they have been playing outside alone since we moved in 2 years ago. I would never let my kids play out a lone. Often we are the only parents outside while the other kids play.

Re: At what age would you let your child walk 1-2 blocks to a friend's house?
At age 5, I would say no. Maybe about 10.
I don't think that things have changed since we were kids. There is just more media out there for us to hear every.single.thing that happens and parents coddle their kids more now.
